Anybody have a female yellow cat?
My wife and i were talking last night about how neither one of us have ever seen a yellow female. We have had a ton of cats in our life , but all the yellows were male.

1. They are extremely rare ...
and usually will have medical problems. I've never had one, but knew of someone who did.

On the flip side of this: all calicos (three colors) are female.

5. Thanks for the replies.
I thought it was strange that I've never seen one.

7. yellow?
Not sure I've seen a yellow cat of either sex.

I have an orange female (in my avatar). They're only kinda-sorta rare. An orange female requires both an orange father and an orange mother. Orange males just need one parent to be orange.

8. Actually completely 'red*' tabby females are rare.

But I volunteer at an animal shelter, and I can say that I've seen plenty of red tabby and white females. Not as many as males, but they're more common than ginger females. I've seen perhaps a half-dozen red tabby females in the past four-plus years at the shelter, but only one tortoiseshell that wasn't female (it was, in fact, a genetic sport that had both male and female genitals).

I'm not sure about this, but I'd hazard a guess that the proportion of ginger, tortoiseshell and calico females(of which, as one poster pointed out, about 95% or more are female) might approach the number of plain ginger males.

I have a red tabby male with no white on him and two tortie females with only small amounts of white. Some would say if they have any white at all they're actually calicos, but I think that's a bit too fine a distinction. They both are brindle.

*Red tabby is what most cat breeders and animal shelters call yellow tabby. It covers the range of colors from 'tomato soup' cats to buff colored cats. Mine's somewhere in between.
