How many cars back can you be and you will still go through the light(not counting those already in the intersection)

5. Legally you can only go if you are already in the intersection
but here in LA no one heeds that. It's just silly.

6. getting "trapped" in an intersection is stupid and dangerous
I only go on green or yellow when I know for sure I can safely get across without stopping in the middle.

8. This happened to me once.
I was in the intersection, and the light turned red.. After all the traffic stopped I continued my left turn. A car in the oncoming lane decided to run the red light and ran into my passenger side as I was starting the turn. I saw the whole thing develop. She was putting on her brakes to stop, I could see the car rocking forward, then she decided to gun it, hard. She gunned it right as I decided to complete the turn. This was about 3 seconds after the light turned red.

I got the ticket and MY insurance rate went up. I asked the judge what I should have done in the situation, and he said I had to wait in the intersection until the oncoming traffic was completely stopped, even if the oncoming traffic runs the red light. Figure that one out.

13. Virtually identical to an experience I had
About a week after getting my license. I absolutely could not believe the guy was accelerating again, so long after the red. He caromed off my passenger side and smashed into two cars that were stopped at the intersection, just as their light turned green.

This was in Miami, a Cuban driver. They are obscenely aggressive, almost without exception. The over/under is 1 tenth of second in Miami, between the light turning green and the driver behind you blasting his horn in impatient outrage.

Luckily, several onlookers came forward and reported the other guy ran a red light. He was judged at fault.

7. yeah... zero
c'mon people. I live in a tourist town. During the summer, especially on weekends, traffic in my little burg is bad, largely because of people who do this - they try to get through intersections after the light has changed, and end up blocking traffic going the other way.

Further, you have a much higher likelihood of causing an accident or hitting a pedestrian.

If the light's red, just wait. Barring unforeseen circumstances, it will turn green again.

10. Explanation inside.... FOUR.
There's a particularly long stop light here -- intersection of two busy roads. Allen Rd. and Route 150. If you don't make it through the arrow(arrow's red otherwise), you wait over 4 minutes. The arrow lasts THIRTY SECONDS.

So, yes, four.

Most of the time (not at those stoplights), two.

People who truly won't do it at all, and I am immediately behind, usually get the horn and/or the swear words.

14. Agreed, and I love the new Las Vegas solution
Motorcycle cops plant themselves at the major intersections on the Strip, especially at Flamingo. They stay just out of sight and watch the left turn signals. The booby prize goes to the last one or two cars that go through on red, a ticket with a hefty charge.

I've stopped and gleefully watched several times, drivers cursing as they pull away after such a "minor" infraction.
