Atkins dieter sues after heart op
A is man suing the estate of diet guru Robert Atkins for $28,000, claiming the eating plan caused his cholesterol levels to soar dangerous levels.
Jody Gorran, 53, took up the low-carbohydrate, high-protein Atkins diet for two years in a bid to lose weight.

He says it raised his cholesterol so much that he had to undergo a medical procedure to unclog blocked arteries.

Mr Gorran's case is being backed by Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine, who advocate veganism.

He says he wants Atkins products to warn of the potential dangers of raised cholesterol levels.

1. Oh, good grief.
Anything that advocates totally cutting any one food group from your diet, how is that going to be healthy? Especially if you're replacing the potential for high-fiber, whole-grain carbs with high-fat, high-cholesterol proteins?? </rant>

2. sue his doctor
not the diet. If his cholesterol was so high his doctor should have suggested another method of losing weight.

Being a meat eater and also being a tolerate person, I am so sick of the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine coming out and promoting their own agenda and being so negative about any high protein(meat)diet.

Every diet has its pros and cons, some work for some people and some don't. It is as simple as that!

4. Isn't this the same group

Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine that illegally gained his medical records and then tried to claim Atkins was obese due to his diet when he died?

Despicable people.

5. Despicable people
and they have finally found their poster child. Poor, sad man and I bet he isn't even aware that he is being manipulated.

3. Sounds like Gorran was abusing the system

...where his favourite foods were cheese every day and cheesecake three times a week, his cholesterol dropped to 146.

Well, hell that'd raise my cholesterol too. Just for the record, I only eat 1-2 oz of cheese/day here on induction, beginning stages. I'll probably stop eating cheese once I'm into the later stages of Atkins.

And once again, Atkins is not especially high protein so much as controlled-carb. Not all carbs are created equal. Atkins is about finding which carbs work with your body the best.

6. Two carbs that anyone should be able to cut from their diet.
Bleached white flour and high fructose corn syrup. The HFCS in particular has been a HUGE part in the epidemic of obesity in this country, and the timing of the increase in the last 20 years or so can be traced to the point where HFCS replaced cane sugar in soft drinks. A 12 ounce can of Coke contains 39 grams of sugar and Coke is actually one of the LEAST sweet brands.

What makes HFCS and bleached flour so dangerous is the fact that they are so highly refined. There's nothing for your body to break down and process, so these carbs are absorbed directly into the bloodstream and stored in the cells.

I'm still working on the weight loss thing, but I physically feel better when I don't eat a lot of carbs, especially the two poisons listed above. For one thing, falling asleep on the job was really embarrassing... :boring: Thank God those days are over.

7. I agree with you about the flour and corn syrup

ditto potatoes, as much as I love them. They break down into glucose rather quickly too.

I no longer get the afternoon slumps eating this way. It's so nice not to have sugar hi's and lows.

Do you find the same problem with pasta? I'm thinking flour of any kind is really not for me.

edit: when I get a hankering for cola I drink Diet Rite. It uses Splenda and is caffine free. It's also way cheaper than coke or pepsi.

Tis is my second go round on induction. And I'm finally understanding how sensitive my body is to caffine. Even green tea gets me out of lipolysis.

8. He should sue himself for being a moron
Edited on Thu May-27-04 11:25 AM by Rabrrrrrr
if he's too stupid to have his cholestoral and other things checked while dieting - while living, actually - then, hell, it ain't Atkins' fault. It's his own damn fault.

I love all the "it's somebody else's responsibility" mantra bullshit going around.

"McDonalds made me fat; Atkins made me have surgery; my hair dryer didn't warn me that i shouldn't put my penis in it;" blah blah blah.

14. "Do not iron clothes while wearing"
Have there always been this many 'morans' or are they just more litigious these days?

15. I think they're more litigious
and as we've become more urban, and away from the rural life in which one was constantly cvonfronted with dangerous machinery and things and learned to respect that, yes, you can get really hurt if you don't stop and think for a moment, we've become dumber about stuff.

part of it is, of course, some bad manufacturers who made truly dangerous things - one should expect a hair dryer to be dangerous in the bathtub, but one shouldn't expect that the power on button will electrocute you or is made with a razor blade, etc.

But much of it is stupid, lazy, moranic people who don't want to have to think about anything, want everything safe, and when they the slightest put out, they sue.

"I ate macaroni and cheese every day for thirty years and my health is the shits! Kraft owes me my life back!"

"I cleaned my tennis shoes with gasoline and now they're ruined and I have a big dead spot in my lawn! Exxon owes me a new pair of shoes and a new lawn!"

9. Too bad the studies show differently.
All the studies done of Atkins are showing it reduces bad cholestoral and raises the "good" kind.

He won't be able to show that it is a predictable side effect of Atkins.

12. Like any diet, Atkins only works if you use it responsibly.
If you're going to be an idiot about it, of course you're not going to be healthy.

16. this one ding dong in my office was on that diet and wasn't
following it properly....she ended up so constipated that she had to go to the doctor so he could explain that a bit of fiber...even in the form of broccoli would help her....plus water...

17. Mine dropped over a hundred points
High cholesterol runs in my family. My brother is skinny and only 30 and his is 250. My mom is only about 20 pounds overweight maybe (eats almost Vegetarian diet) and hers is also high and she's on Lipitor. My dad's is high too.
Mine used to be terrible when I was heavier- 289! The good kind outweighed the bad kind, but still, for my age that was rather alarming. Now it's over a hundred points less on what is basically Atkins, but I don't abuse it (not much in the way of fatty meats, minimal cheeses) and get most of my fats from monounsaturated sources, plenty of veggies, etc.
