Family Kicked Out of Graduation for Cheering
GRANDVIEW, Mo. -- Imagine cops throwing you out of your own child's graduation just for expressing your joy.

It happened Monday night to several families at a local ceremony, and it was all caught on tape.

KCTV5's Liana Joyce reported live on "KCTV5 News at 6 p.m." that there was a dress code and a behavior code that was strictly followed at the Grandview High School graduation.

One family who got kicked out for cheering their son's accomplishments said it was being taken too far.

1. what is wrong with people?
people should be proud and happy about their teen's accomplishments. My friends cheering for me made me happy when I graduated from HS many moons ago.

4. I don't disagree
But anyone who has been to a high school graduation knows names are called one after the other. There's no pause. Kids names are called and they walk across. There are no "do overs".

While it's regretable these people got kicked out, I find it equally regretable other parents might miss their kid's name being called because some ya-hoos were screaming. I've seen this happen at every single graduation I've been too and it's not fair to those people either.

2. THey threatened to do that at my Graduation...
Course, alot of people cheered, I would have loved to see them try and throw out some of them, especially considering ths school was said to favor non-black students.

3. Graduation ceremonies tend to be long cheer, don't they?
As each student has their name read onstage, of course their family is going to cheer. This family must have been trying to outdo Michael Moore's outstanding ovation at Cannes, LOL!

6. my family and I were kicked out of the hospital when my sister was in
labor and having our first grandchild. Some dimwit
nurse at the desk told us to leave. Man, was the
doctor ever MAD when he heard about this. Nazis are
everywhere.

7. When I graduated...
...back in 83, my name was read and there were a few chuckles, then someone yelled out "it's about time". After that the place cheered and they had to stop the ceremony. They told everyone to keep the applauses down until after all the names have been read.
At least it wasn't my family. They were probably more confused than proud of me...lol.

10. And what about those who couldn't hear their kids name called?
Because this kid's family was being so loud. Two sides to every story.

14. even with a monster pa system
some people at my graduation failed to hear their names because of over zealous and obnoxious families who thought they were too good to abide by the common courtesty of cheering at the end with everyone else. I felt really bad for the girl after me. I was the drum major and president of the orchestra/band council. When my name was read, the drummers decided to show off. Poor girl probably didn't even hear her name.

Although the cheers felt good at the time, I know I would have felt awful if I couldn't have my parents even hear my name.

They were rightly asked to leave. It's inconsiderate.

13. At my graduation, the principal asked people to withhold their applause
until the end, but someone got started by clapping once between each graduate. (Anthony Ackerman...clap...Samantha Adler....clap...) It lasted to the Gs or so.

When Tony Zizzo graduated, and everyone started clapping, he took a bow and pitched his cap into the audience. His 10 seconds of fame, I guess.

16. mine was run by a similar gestapo

Someone had ostensibly been injured by a thrown mortarboard at the '80 graduation, so us '81 grads wore mortarboards made of foam rubber instead of cardboard. :eyes: Even so, we were warned that the instant one graduate threw a hat, the ceremony would end. Dead stop, right then.

The very last person across the stage threw his hat, and they weren't kidding. The sound system was turned off and whatever was left on the program was discarded. People left in confusion.

Big fat f'ing deal. I doubt it ruined it for anyone. 1,000 graduates, in the June So. Cal. sun, in dark green gowns with suits & nylons on underneath. It was an interminable disgusting ceremony and I remember it best for getting home after it was over.

Edit: Not that I am unsympathetic to the cheering families who were thrown out. That's just wrong.
