I sometimes feel like I'm Alice in Wonderland...
Here we are, in the United States, May 26, 2004. We have a multitude of problems facing us. Global warming. The misuse of the environment and what kind of world we are leaving to the generations after us. Poverty, in a country with so much wealth. Homelessness. Kids in school who can't read or write.

And the worst thing, the absolute worst thing in this country facing us today...the one issue that we have to rush on before its too late...is GAY MARRIAGE????!!!! Why is it that this is the worst problem today, according to the most vocal out there? Why don't the people who are sounding the alarm about couples who merely want to get married not getting worked up over hunger and poverty and homelessness and illiteracy? Why don't these christians who are so up in arms about gay marriage care about problems that Jesus would be appalled about today? The fact that people are lying on the street, homeless? In a country with as much wealth as this one?

I certainly don't want to belittle gay marriage, as I'm a gay man. But when I read the paper and read about how it's an "emergency" that gay couples are getting married in Massachusetts...why isn't there a sense of emergency about homelessness and poverty and hunger and illiteracy? I see these problems...problems that CAN be addressed and worked on with the help of government and individuals...yes, government DOES have a role in the betterment of its people...and I just shake my head in amazement as to why nothing is being done. I guess this post, disjointed as it may seem, explains why I'm a liberal.

I want to cry sometimes. Just out of helplessness and worry.

2. They're diverting attention from the problems
So they can get re-elected.

Churches (by that I mean the leadership) aren't stupid...many are getting rich from faith-based initiatives. The initiatives are by no means "solving" hunger and poverty, but they sure are lining the pockets of the very same churches that tell their voters to keep voting Republican!

Neither this administration nor many churches (leadership) actually care about the problems we face as a society. They just blind their sheeple to the real problems by giving them the gay marriage focus point. Thus they maintain their power, wealth, and congregations.

Yes, its May 26th, 2004- my 30th birthday actually, and this is the world I live in, how depressing. :(

3. You're exactly right
Rush Limbaugh flat out said that Bush has to attack the gay marriage issue to get his numbers back up. It's the ONLY THING HE HAS LEFT!!

This is all the more reason why you shouldn't even let them get going. Don't let them bait you into a baseless and pointless argument. Let's face it - if they can shove through a Constitutional amendment on this, we've got much bigger problems anyway, like the fact that if they're THAT strong, the righties can do whatever they want and we're going to have to take it.
