What do you do when someone blackmails you?
Edited on Wed May-26-04 12:24 AM by ringmastery
A friend at work has been fudging some of her timesheets (nothing really eregious, pretty much 5 or 10 minutes here and there, it's all on the honor system so no real way to prove it), but another co-worker picked up on it and basically said it would remain between them as long as this person agrees to do some of the other co-workers extra work.

Basically, because my friend fucked up, she's now being de facto blackmailed and at the beck and call of this other person. It's not right.

1. Time to reverse it on her ass...

Either she can come clean, she can bluff her way out of it that she will do something crazier, or she can get some blackmail material of her own to work with...

7. I've watched hundreds and hundreds of movies
There is no doubt that the solution to blackmail is to bash in the fucking skull of the blackmailer.

This ain't rocket science!

4. blackmail is more serious than fudging 5 or 10 min...
tell your friend to stand her ground, if it goes to the manager, not only will the other worker seem petty for caring about 5-10 minutes, but after your friend tells the manager that she was under threat of blackmail... that should change things, just make sure she stops fudging her numbers.

6. Call her bluff.
And lie like hell when she tells the boss. If it can't be proven, it will be one's word against the other. They might both be disciplined or it might just be dropped.

And tell your friend to stop doing it unless everyone else is doing it, too. In which case, there's her defense right there.

I hate nosy, nasty people like that. Why would it even be any of this woman's business that her co-worker is fudging on her time?

8. At that point,
a) take it to the authorities (the boss) and lay it out as it is -- less desirable if the thing they have on you is somehow really damaging, of course

b) outmaneuver them -- the most elegant and just solution, though not always apparent

c) threaten them with physical harm

d) commit physical harm (if the stakes are high enough), but make sure that they make the first move

By the way, the NSA is bugging every hotel room in America. How? Hidden mikes in the Gideon Bibles. Pass it on.

13. LOL great thread
I'm having some trouble at work, too. No blackmail, but my union steward keeps trying to intimidate me. He yelled at me and started posturing last night because I asked him if he was finished with his engine, and was giving me all kinds of passive aggressive bullshit today.

I wanna quit but I'm making too much money. Any advice about dealing with union-backed bullies appropriate for someone who's only been on the job two and a half weeks?

15. Treat it like boot camp, if...
...you're of the temperament to do so. It'll pass--he's just picking on you because you're new.
