Question regarding punctuation
Edited on Tue May-25-04 11:52 PM by rumguy
This is on a resume.

If a word is highlighted bold with a colon after it, but the words following the colon are not highlighted bold - should the colon be highlighted bold or not?

1. not highlighted
the bold only applies to the word.

2. Highlight the colon
That's what I would do.

I don't think it's a big deal, though. I know you want the résumé to be perfect, but it's impossible.

See how I put the accents on the word résumé? That always impresses them. Double-check the proper accenting, though, because there's always a chance that even I am wrong.

Good luck!

3. You must really want that job if you're willing to "highlight your colon"
Sounds painful.

6. highlight the colon
According to the Chicago Manual of Style (of course there are other style manuals so this is not the Word of God or anything), "the typographic treatment of punctuation adjacent to a variant font (italic or boldface, for instance) should be governed by both appearance and meaning. Generally, punctuation marks are printed in the same style or font of type as the word, letter, character, or symbol immediately preceding them." (note "generally")

There are of course exceptions but no need to get into them here.
