'War of the naked'
Edited on Thu Aug-21-03 10:35 AM by Kellanved
I have read posts by DUers complaining/remarking about nekkid people in Europe - well this article sums up the debate here quite nicely

Germany has become so relaxed about people stripping off and sun bathing in the nude that the only people who seem to be enraged are members of the country's long-established naturist clubs. Barry Whelan takes stock of the crisis that has hit the nation's once-flourishing free body culture (FKK) movement.
...
German society has become so liberal that nude bathers are a regular sight at beaches, lakes and rivers, with nobody appearing to take great umbrage — except the FKK movement itself.
"War of the naked," headlined the Bild newspaper as it quoted nudists on an official FKK beach complaining about the "exhibitionists" who sunbathe nude wherever they place their towels.
The war of words may be no more than a summer storm in the sand but there is a more serious side for FKK members, who praise their pursuit as mentally, spiritually and physically liberating, and like to keep a semblance of order about the discarding of clothes.
...

According to one "official" nudist quoted by Bild, the "wild naked" were "somehow not proper nudists, not so nicely organised". She pointed out: "We in the FKK club have great barbecue evenings, play games together — everybody knows everyone else."
But an "unofficial" nudist — a 32-year-old mother-of-two — hit back by calling FKK club members narrow-minded conservatives.
"You only have to look around you on an FKK beach — you wouldn't want to see these people even in swimming trunks," she told Bild.
...

(Warning: pictures of naked people - and not the pretty kind)

2. oops - bad link
goes to an article about terrorism and Moamer Gaddafi (as they have it spelled)

interesting that the nudists are being called conservatives. :-) THough I'd like to read the whole thing...

I wish the US had as decent and open and thoughtful response to our bodies as the Europeans, instead of treating our bodies like some kind of taboo erotica temples of damnation.

7. I always found the site a great source
They tend to translate German news faster than the Agencies and offer fascinating half-outside/half-inside views on Germany. Sometimes they are off or outdated, but it is both entertaining and educating nonetheless.

5. Michael Caine says...
...the sight of a naked man is just plain ridiculous. Hats off to anyone with the guts to do it anyway in the 100+ degree heat they've had in Europe this year.

This is no joke - 5000 people died in France alone from the heat.
