The Cicadas are Screaming at 96 decibels

Or so my sound engineer husband tells me! He says when he mixes in a nightclub, that's about how loud he likes it, and people always complain!

Man, they are NOISY.

1. I must be nuts...

I'm living in the Netherlands, and there are none of those here. And I feel like I'm missing something....
That's the best picture I've seen of one of them yet - really shows the red eyes.

4. Report from Philadelphia

Actually, the area just north of where I-95 meets the PA Turnpike (Willow Grove Exit).

I've seen ONE cicada -- and it was a dead one.

I've seen lots of holes where they have been popping up, but they are all still staying underground.

No cicada wasps, either (thank gosh)!

It has been very hot and damp, so you'd expect them to be making baby cicadas by the long ton. But they're not.

6. It's only that loud in some places

I am in Southern Indiana. In some places they are EVERYWHERE! And where they are thick it is deafening. I really wished I had some earplugs today. I have quite a few at my house (like the one who posed for the picture) but they are not too loud, which is good, because we run a recording studio. They are fascinating to look at -- you can see the little resonators on their backs. I've watched them emerge, shed their shells, and spread their transparent wings. It's kinda beautiful.

Of course, now I feel bad about what I did to the first dead one I found on my porch:



In retrospect, it seems mean to the cicadas. I've come to like the little buggers.

8. Really!

I'm going to play the stereo really loud. They blend in nice with music that is heavy on percussion.

They also go well with bad 50's science fiction movies!
