Poll question: Are you a cheapass?
Do you tip the room attendant/house keeper/chamber maid ? Let me tell you, they are the hardest workers in the hotel.

Also, tipping housekeeping BEFORE you check out is perfectly acceptable, but leave it on the pillow, or we can't take it.

3. I always try to tip the house staff
and the wait staff. They are the least paid in any establishment. And I always try to call people by their name.

5. and what about the jackasses who don't tip waiters..grrr
Edited on Sat May-22-04 07:08 PM by eleonora
If the service is bad, ok, but TIP well if the service was correct. We only make $2.25 an hour.

Once I busted my ass for an 8 hour shift at a top gourmet restaurant (#2 in the US/NY Times) for 10 friggin' bucks.

6. No
A housekeeper in Vegas told me she never saw the money, some supervisor apparently pocketed it all anyway. According to her, no one tips the housekeepers. So it seems a waste. When I tip my waiters, I know they get it, well, minus the "tip outs" anyway.

8. You can get around this
by personally handing them an envelope. That way you can make sure the person who served you gets the tip.

first of all, that's theft. Second, We are the FIRST ones in the room at checkout. Also that's Las Vegas, people aren''t going to tip if they just lost all thier money. There are other hotels and other cities in the world. Boo on you.

On Edit YOU ARE A CHEAPASS:7

19. 1 Dollar Coin -
The dollar bill was replaced by a coin in 1989. This coin is called a "Loonie". This is because it contains a picture of that quintessential North American bird, the Loon. (If you've never heard one in the wild, you don't know what your missing). Oddly enough, the coin was originally supposed to have a picture of a Voyageur (French Canadian fur trapper in a canoe), but the moulds were stolen, so they changed it. It will be interesting to see if the slang term "Loonie" carries over to the one dollar coin in the US when it gets into wide circulation. Nearly all vending machines now accept Loonies and the two dollar coins as well.

20. Our money has stupid names
"Loonie" is wierd..and "Twoonie" IS just plain cheesy.... Some people were calling them "Bear Bucks" or "Dubloonies" when they first arrived...as well many spent the better part of a year in the basement trying to punch the centre out.

26. tipping's not as common in Aust
except in restaurants where 10% of the bill is standard - but often you have to point out to the waiter that it IS a tip and they don't need to bring change - then even 14 year olds working at supermarkets get waaaay more than "$2.25 an hour." how the hell does anyone survive on that??

I usually tip taxi drivers too (Melbourne's a big sprawling city with streets filled with INSANE drivers!) and occaisionally have to argue with friends about tipping in restaurants - for em unless the service is lousy I'll tip - and I'm the cheapest person I know - I don't even clothes shop in chain stores anymore coz they're too expensive!
