So can anyone else's cat tell time
Our Calico knows when it is time to be feed. At 9 PM she is in the front room immediately griping that she has not been feed. if she starts earlier say 8:30 all I have to say is it is not time and she will wait til 9.

2. My cat reminds me to give her her medicine
I sometimes forget, but she starts yowling and pestering me to give it to her. Of course then it is a battle. Giving a cat a pill is almost impossible.

3. I know my late kitty Fergus could
(see avatar). Once a friend from out of state was visiting me, and I had to work a couple of days while she was there. She said about 4:30 Ferg would go to the front door and start pacing back and forth until I'd arrive around 5:00. He was truly the best cat ever (for oh so many reasons).

I think Monty and Simba can tell time. They have cycles throughout the day; in the morning they want to be upstairs after they eat (in the basement); then at night they become quiet and lie peacefully together on the basement couch.

4. Ours
Head to the front room around 15 minutes before we come home and wait for us. You can tell when we are late, cause the come out of the bedroom with this look of "WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN!"

5. Absolutely! Our tiny Persian knows when it's 3:30 p.m., time for
my husband to wake up from third shift napping; almost without fail, she'll start purring and drooling on his face to wake him up, even give him a swat on the nose.

6. I used to have a cat who would wake me up
at 5:30 am on the dot every morning. It came in handy weekday mornings, but was a pain on the weekends. She would gently poke me in the face with her paw until I got up to feed her.

20. Mine too!
Actually, childhood dog, long gone now. He was confined to the yard, but if he looked out the window and saw the gate was open, he'd run to the door, whack the handle, and good-bye! I was usually the one to have to chase him down.

Smart dog.

8. Not a cat...
...but my 10 year old dog knows exactly when 10pm hits (on or off daylight savings).

I should explain: I've always given her a half cup of milk around that time since I rescued her as a 6 1/2-week old puppy dumped on a major highway, grrrr. I started her off on milk because solids didn't work for her - she was too young. Now it's just her "treat" (something like my "ice cream"). ;-)

10pm? No milk? I am E-vil. She'll let me know.

10. LOL! I can see that...

My childhood dog would scoot her bowl around everywhere she went if she wanted food. Not too obvious or anything. :-)

11. Louie must've been Swiss. He operated like an exquisite watch.
Time to wake up, knew weekends were for later wake up. Understood holidays and vacations. Knew when it was time for his vitamin. Knew when I needed to start lunch, let the dog out, let the dog in, let the dog back out, watch for favorite kids to come. When it was time for the Celtic music on the Saturday web cast of KXCI and when Havocdad was making his second latte on weekend mornings, which meant time to go walk around the garden.

He was the director around here. He did not teach the dog diddly about telling time and the place has gone to hell since he passed two weeks ago. Last thing he told the dog must've been: Make sure they get up on time. The dog has never been a morning person but spent 10 days fretting from 3AM on about whether and when to wake us. He really stressed out about it. Has finally given up and is very annoyed that he can't do the job the cat left him.

Miss the old rascal and hate the idea of getting another alarm clock but I just can't stand the one we have. Nothing will be as sweet as Louie's joyful morning purr and soft nose bump.

17. Louie was the smartest cat I ever met
Daughter rescued him from the shelter when he was about 7. He had been abused and was somewhat skittish of men for years but got over it little by little. Never held a grudge and was the most joyful, grateful cat. He so loved Havocdad when he came into our life. Havocdad loved little Louie and spoiled him in his old age.

Have had the good fortune to know many great animals and call a few mine. But Louie was the smartest cat I ever met. He was a great problem solver. He leaves a damned big hole in our lives and hearts but the memories are wonderful. The dog misses him something awful and has periods of very obvious grieving during each day.

Damn, I hate the alarm clock in the morning.

18. That's a wonderful story!
We think we have to know our pets, right? But in reality, THEY know us. That is a wonderful thing. The fact that Louie taught your dog the importance of "getting up on time" is a good thing. Cross species communication isn't easy, I don't imagine, but your cat did it. Even if the dog couldn't quite follow through...he tried!

I'm very sorry on the loss of your pet...that's a very, very hard thing. Your memories will carry him on. Or so that is what I tell myself as I face the time when my pooper-skadoodle (nickname #236, but who's counting?) passes on.

I loved your post. Thank you. :-)

15. I don't know if she can tell time...
But my ferret likes to get me up around 6 am. She's a free-roaming ferret, but she has a cage where I keep her food and water. Once when her food dish was empty, she climbed up on top of the cage and knocked the plastic bottle onto the floor to wake me up. She then realized that she could do that to get me up even when her food dish was full.

Damn tube rat.

19. heh....
My husband wasn't a dog person when we got our huge quad-leg furball. With that in mind, I warned him she would figure out how to get his attention, and that he should nip "unwanted" attention-getting schemes in the bud, or they would get worse over time. Sharing my accumulated knowledge, you understand.

To this day he asks me with a straight face, "why does she want me to let her out every morning at 3AM, while she doesn't even try to wake you up?" Uh...cause you let her out just ONE TIME and she has it all figured out now?

Not that it's wrong...but animals know what's up. It may take them a while longer, but they eventually get our number. :-)

That's when they get their bit of tuna in the basement, and then it's off to bed, and basement door gets closed. If I try to talk them into it even 10 minutes early, they look at me as if I'm an idiot. However, if I'm even five minutes late, they start to bust up the house.
