Warning - When I Am an Old Woman I Shall Wear Purple

By Jenny Joseph

When I am an old woman, I shall wear purple

with a red hat that doesn't go, and doesn't suit me.

And I shall spend my pension on brandy and summer gloves

and satin candles, and say we've no money for butter.

I shall sit down on the pavement when I am tired

and gobble up samples in shops and press alarm bells

and run my stick along the public railings

and make up for the sobriety of my youth.

I shall go out in my slippers in the rain

and pick the flowers in other people's gardens

and learn to spit.

You can wear terrible shirts and grow more fat

and eat three pounds of sausages at a go

or only bread and pickles for a week

and hoard pens and pencils and beer nuts and things in boxes.

But now we must have clothes that keep us dry

and pay our rent and not swear in the street

and set a good example for the children.

We must have friends to dinner and read the papers.

But maybe I ought to practice a little now?

So people who know me are not too shocked and surprised

When suddenly I am old, and start to wear purple.

It was more about the stages of of being a girl to woman.

When we are younger we are obsessed with our looks
and as we get older we should spend more time enjoying
life . I believe the author died this year and was a
famous feminist . The last verse is about wearing purple .

5. try the Red Hat Society?
bet they have a website... maybe they have the poem of which you speak. Most tend to think of the above poems when this is mentioned. Cool question, though.

6. I think I might know what you're talking about.
Sounds like something someone emailed me once; I don't think I still have it, but when I have a minute, I'll look.

7. Can't find it..but here's a good one
The Girl You Knew

The girl you knew at twenty two
Who heard the vows you made,
Became your wife and shared your life,
May now look slightly frayed.

Others, such fun at twenty one,
Whom you can still recall,
Find time more kind since in your mind
They have not aged at all.

Think, as you pass the looking glass,
Those laughing girls you knew
Could be the grumpy grandmamas
Who hog your pension queue.

I Shall Wear Purple...
By Judith Moriarty

(Adapted from Jenny Joseph's poem
'When I Am An Old Woman, I Shall Wear Purple')

When I am a little girl, I shall wear purple

And maybe a red hat which doesn't go and doesn't suit me

And I shall dream of meadows with butterflies and summer scarves

And oh, leather scandals and drinking goat's milk with Pawpaw

I shall splash in summer puddles and catch fireflies in the twilight

I will rescue broken birds, learn to yodel and catch the fog in my hands

I will roller skate, and visit secret waterfalls that lay deep in wooded valleys

I will close my eyes and wish real hard that I will stay forever nine

I will move mountains with my faith, and plant fields of dancing flowers

I shall creep out at night and scatter joy-peace-love and kindness

I shall wrap myself in floral scarves and dance in a hidden holler field

And in my Land of Peace only the children shall rule in laughter

But I have to leave for a little while

To prepare a banquet of peace for you

A place of sanctuary where war does not live.

9. I'll bet this is what you're lookin for
IF I HAD MY LIFE TO LIVE OVER - by Erma Bombeck
(written after she found out she was dying from cancer.)

I would have gone to bed when I was sick instead of pretending the earth would go into a holding pattern if I weren't there for the day.

I would have burned the pink candle sculpted like a rose before it melted in storage.

I would have talked less and listened more.

I would have invited friends over to dinner even if the carpet was stained, or the sofa faded.

I would have eaten the popcorn in the 'good' living room and worried much less about the dirt when someone wanted to light a fire in the fireplace..

I would have taken the time to listen to my grandfather ramble about his youth.

I would have shared more of the responsibility carried by my husband.

I would never have insisted the car windows be rolled up on a summer day because my hair had just been teased and sprayed.

I would have sat on the lawn with my grass stains.

I would have cried and laughed less while watching television and more while watching life.

I would never have bought anything just because it was practical, wouldn't show soil, or was guaranteed to last a lifetime.

Instead of wishing away nine months of pregnancy, I'd have cherished every moment and realized that the wonderment growing inside me was the only chance in life to assist God in a miracle.

When my kids kissed me impetuously, I would never have said, "Later. Now go get washed up for dinner." There would have been more "I love you's." More "I'm sorry's."

But mostly, given another shot at life, I would seize every minute....look at it and really see it .... live it .and never give it back. Stop sweating the small stuff.

Don't worry about who doesn't like you, who has more, or who's doing what.

Instead, let's cherish the relationships we have with those who do love us.

Let's think about what God HAS blessed us with. And what we are doing each day to promote ourselves mentally, physically, emotionally, as we only have one shot at this and then it's gone.. I hope you all have a blessed day.

Beautiful Women's Month
Age 3: She looks at herself and sees a Queen.
Age 8: She looks at herself and sees Cinderella.
Age 15: She looks at herself and sees an Ugly Sister (Mum I can't go to school looking like this!)
Age 20: She looks at herself and sees "too fat/too
thin, too short/too tall, too straight/too curly"- but decides she's going out anyway.
Age 30: She looks at herself and sees "too fat/too thin, too short/too tall, too straight/too curly" - but decides she doesn't have time to fix it, so she's going out anyway.
Age 40: She looks at herself and sees "clean" and goes out anyway.
Age 50: She looks at herself and sees "I am" and goes wherever she wants to go.
Age 60: She looks at herself and reminds herself of all the people who can't even see themselves in the mirror anymore Goes out and conquers the world.
Age 70: She looks at herself &sees wisdom, laughter and ability, goes out and enjoys life.
Age 80: Doesn't bother to look. Just puts on a purple hat and goes out to have fun with the world.

12. You are entirely welcome!
We used it at church on March 7 to celebrate National Women's Month.

We called it "Purple Hat Sunday" and asked everyone to wear a purple hat, if one was on hand, or, if not, to wear "something" purple(we had purple lapel ribbons for folks who didn't have anything else)"in honor of a special woman in your lives".

We were, by that time, feeling very uninspired as we had been meeting since January in the basement hall, rather than in our beautiful sanctuary, to save money on heating oil.

Looking out over a veritable sea of purple really picked up everyone's spirits. We did, in essence, just put on a purple hat and go out to have fun in the world.
