Poll question: Have you ever tried chips fried in Olestra?
Have you ever tried chips fried in Olestra?

The synthetic fat designed NOT to be digested by your body?

How much you wanna bet there are NO people who have lost weight on it (except for the ones who are now skeletons)

1. Actually was a big fan of the "WOW" brand - for a while
until it became clear that carbs, and not just fat, was an issue when looking to loose weight, which was my goal.

THEN it became clear to me that simple sugars, yes - potatoes, wreaked havoc with a body's blood sugar.

So, for a while, I migrated from WOW Lay's (the chips, man) to WOW Doritos. But those are made with real cheese, from cows, and cows are prone to "mad cow disease" and, aside from the moral questions, what I've read here at DU about the purposely lax testing of cattle led me to just say no to it all.

Lately I've gotten into honey-roasted soy nuts, which are ok, considering (considering I eat them with beer, lol).

Well, since you asked.

:D

3. BSE is not present in cow's milk from what I understand.
In fact, almost all of the prions that cause the disease are found in the brain and spinal column.

It's well known that cattle have been given food that includes meat by-products (including infected brain & nervous system tissue) thus infecting them with BSE.

One of the other main factors in the prions getting into the meat supply is the way factory-farmed cattle are slaughtered and cut up.

Generally, the cattle are led into a holding pen, they're locked into place, and a compressor-driven steel bolt is shot at bullet speed into the brain, killing the animal instantly (this was thought to be a quick, inexpensive, and humane way of killing the animal.) The problem is that the bolt shatters skull and brain fragments, sending them all over the place, and the heart, which can continue to beat for some time, carries the blood, now laden with brain matter throughout the animal's system, where it's thought that it can come to rest in muscle tissues that we eat. Even if an animal is infected with BSE, there would be little risk of infection if the animals were slughtered in a different manner.

Not drinking milk is fine- there are other ways to get protein and calcium, but I don't think BSE is a significant risk.
