What your opinion of stuffing your dead animals?
Edited on Tue May-18-04 06:01 AM by neoteric lefty
My grandma, before she died, had her favorite dog stuffed to remember him. I think its pretty morbid to have any PAST living organism stuffed for your pleasure.

1. I think the idea is to have the dead organisms stuffed
but I agree, it's messed up.

4. I saw an awesome skit a year or two ago
Gad, I think it was even on FOX, some short lived summer show with farcical segments.

The premise:a guy had a girlfriend who briefly left town but left her dog behind. They had the boyfriend bring the dog to actual taxidermists, explaining that he didn't like the dog or have time to care for it, and wanted to have him stuffed. The dog was still very much alive.

It was hysterical to hear the taxidermist or his assistants hesitatingly explain to the guy that they could not do that. The actor was terrific. He insisted and finally one taxidermist was explaining what had to be done, even providing an estimate of cost!

5. Trigger?

Along with their famous saddles, there are the most popular exhibits: the mounted (not stuffed!) carcasses of Trigger, Buttermilk, and dog Bullet.

6. a very eccentric friend of a very eccentric friend of mine. . .
Intended to have her Afghan Hound stuffed upon it's demise.

In a strange twist of fate, the dog contracted an untreatable case of "the mange" towards the end of it's life. So that option's desirability was diminished vastly.

7. Well, if it's consensual ...
Oh, not that kind of stuffing and mounting? ... sorry ...

Personally, I wouldn't do it and think it is tastelessly morbid to have
one's dead pet standing around, gathering dust and staring into the
distance.

There is a certain degree of educational benefit (e.g., in a natural
history museum) - I didn't appreciate the actual size of some creatures
simply by seeing photos in books but standing next to them in a museum
got the message across OK.

On the other hand, they can be gruesomely spooky at times. My wife
cannot stay in the same room as a stuffed animal and walks very quickly
through any gallery containing them, preferably looking at the floor
to avoid even seeing them briefly.

9. I find it disturbing
the sign of someone who cannot let go. I would recommend a therapist over a taxidermist.
