Who wants to join me on a deserted island for a year?
Ever just feel so frustrated with your life, annoying people, and the state of the world, that you want to pack your bags and just go somewhere and have some peace for awhile? I do. Well, not total peace, it would realistically be hard work at times, but that's part of the fun. Who's coming?

wasn't deserted.

People! Highly overrated. Taste like chicken, so I've heard.

7. Well THAT island
was infested with loonies. Nope, wouldn't be that one. :D
My island would be nameless in the Pacific probably far away from civilization. Just me and my cononuts. Oh, and lots of fish, a freshwater stream, plenty of available firewood, infrequent storms, and some assorted fruit growing around.

just at the mere mention... :D

I didn't know we were leaving spouses at home... though I don't have one, it's still good to know... myself and two felines are all you'll get from me, not too much space to take up... ok I guess I should bring the guitar, too

will there be any laws, community standards, etc, that I'd need to know about?

36. Nah, my coconuts aren't that interesting
The laws though include:

1. No freeloaders (all must work).
2. Consenting adults type thing.
3. What happens on the island, stays on the island.
4. No republicans.

that's a matter best resolved on the island...

well the rules seem to work great for me- no modesty laws, no forbidden horticulture, and none of those $%&#% subdivision rules about what colour your mailbox has to be. I like it! :D

It's hard to make out. (The island that is.)
The second one doesn't look too hospitable at all. I'd bet those Jehovah Witnesses could still track you down though. :)

My kind of neighborhood. All topless beaches, too. In fact, Forrest's Island is clothing-optional.

I like the extended-digit aspect of the second island, though -- just to make sure that those Witnesses get the message.

63. that does sound great...however...
if you don't mind a suggestion. You might try taking on a project. In the past month or so, I have been building a deck in my backyard, and my spirits have been great. Everyday, I look foward to getting home, and getting another small part of my project done. It has given me a real sense of accomplishment. Granted, building things may not be your cup of tea, but maybe there is something similar that might fit the bill for you. Oh, and more to your point. How deserted are you talking?? It needs to have running water for showers. Oh, and it needs to have a hefty supply of rum runner, or hurricane ingredients. Just my 1.3 cents worth though...Kevin

If you get really serious there are a couple books you should read first.

There will have to be a boat to pick them up after about a week. :) This island is just in my head. Immediately, I though something in the Pacific. Post 7 gives a good description.

I couldn't get serious about this if I wanted to unfortunately, but I can dream. Maybe someday. I'd definitely read up on some additional survival stuff.

72. I'm in.
I'll do the grilling and bbq. Hope there's some wildlife around for us flesh-eaters. We should be able to righ up some kind of solar powered generators for the necessities like beer coolers and the like.

75. I was thinking more seafood
But maybe we'll have a nearby island with some wild boars and a boat to get there. That way, when we want ribs....Yum :P.

78. I'm already there. Well, okay, it's mostly a deserted swamp.
You should hear the frog chorus tonight.

Little farm, out of the way, old farm house (was in semi-abandoned shape when I bought it, now fixed up rustic & very simple). All the windows are old wavy glass.

Grow veggies & fish. Hang out with the dogs, relax with the cat. Radio. Hummingbirds. Herons. Frogs. Turtles sunning on a log in the pond. Tire swing. Hammock. Plum tree.

82. That sound nice too
In a mainland sort of way. :) It may be where the road of life takes me down the road.
However, my once ever trip to a psychic told me I would live by the ocean someday (I'm not far now, but about 45 miles and it's actually Long Island Sound, so only kinda sorta part of the Atlantic).

86. Mainland it isn't. It's the space between the land and the water.
I guess. Swamp, then lake, then Gulf.

The few houses that are out here are raised, some high on stilts. The utility company's meter-readers have boats to get to some folks' houses. Another day of rain, and the road will be under water for awhile.

You mentioned seafood? Shrimp, crabs, crawdads, fish. Wild pigs in the swamp, as well, if you're inclined.

79. we could have a great time, SarahBelle...
Edited on Mon May-17-04 11:48 PM by rppper
with just a few basic camping tools, a hatchet, an axe, pocket knife or multi tool, some fishing gear, a few nets, a good zippo lighter and some fuel, some rope and a few hundred yards of twine, some good cargo style clothes, a couple of sleeping bags and a good, heavy tent.....i could make you the deserted island hut of your dreams, complete with furniture and all the necessities. nothing like a deserted island, with plenty of palms, bamboo, various vines and such, to challenge us in building our little slice-o-paradise. just imagine the unlimited seafood dinners and campfires, cool ocean breeze, an unobstructed view of the stars at night, diving in the reefs.....nice thought, huh? not a care in the world....

and best of all, i'm single, know the outdoors and i'm not to hard on the eyes...lol

i would require some sort of solar powered radio though...preferably short wave. we have to have some music. a good supply of toiletries too...but otherwise i think i could provide a decent life with the above mentioned items and tools.

i always dream about that too...i was kind of enamored with the film castaway. all the survival training i had in the military would finally be used productivly. and on top of everything else, i would have a wonderful woman to share it with.....

;)

I can do without all this technology, just unplug and walk away. I would need to bring a huge supply of strings for the acoustic guitar.

Also, A big supply of soap and deodorant. Primitive is one thing, but those are a couple of things I wouldn't want to be without. :wow:

Toiletries are fine. I'm bringing my Venus razor and soap. I mean, if it's clothing optional, I at least want hair free pits. Probably legs too. Maybe not too enlightened, but oh well.

I don't know if the kiddos can handle low tech though, but probably. They're resourceful. Hubby can be resourceful, but then again he'd have to give up baseball and talk with me peacefully. That might be a tough order. :D

98. Room for another?
If you're going to the Pacific, any chance of a nice volcano on a
neighbouring island? (Not close enough to wreck our idyllic home
but near enough to swim/sail over to every now & then). If not, I'll
have to make do with watching the odd lightning storm over the sea.

Fish, fruit, freshwater ... yep, I think I could manage that.
Coconuts too? Even better :-)

Would have to take a strong sharp knife though - not just to sort out
the food but to do a little carving every now and then.

Hmmm ... definitely drifting over to the island now, far from this
dreary office ... see you there one day!

108. This is what happens when you announce deserted islands. People.
Ya'll can have ~your~ not-very-deserted-after-all island, mine has a 12 legs limit. And if I decide that means 6 people or 2 people, each with a cat; that is my decision, it is the rule of the island, and so shall it be done.
