Are you the only liberal/progressive/DUer in your neighborhood?
I am. My family may agree with my letters to the editor but they think I am positioning myself for a visit from the local bfee rep. Most middle class families from all walks of life feel it their duty to join the herd and vote bfee. It is maddening to walk among such phony jerks. This no longer scares me. I am prepared to fight. Just waiting for the call to action from my leaders in Sacramento and DC.

1. I must be. The freakazoid across the street has one of those
cockamamie bumperstickers on his pickup that spews: "First Baghdad, then on to Paris!" The guy next door, with the diesel pickup truck he insists on revving loudly on Sunday mornings, has a sticker that says "These colors don't run, never have, never will." I'd love to ask him: What about the battle of Bunker Hill, the battle of Brooklyn Heights, the first and second battles of Bull Run, the battle of Kasserine Pass? All battles that we ran from. But I guess it's unpatriotic to point out that Americans are not perfect and that we have major flaws.

After September 11, 2001, I saw the proliferation of American flags in the neighborhood as a sign of unity, and the fact that we will prevail. Now, I just see them as banners for the Chimp and his unthinking sheep minions.

3. Rough neighborhood
Most of my neighbors will not confront me. Most of the older people know that when the fit hits the shan I will be the first to lend a hand so they ignore my letters and put up with me.

8. Well, that's the thing, see. It's a NICE neighborhood. Middle class
people I might actually quite like. But they've been stunned into uberpatriotic droning and patriotically correct displays of theflag and anti-everything-not-Amurikkan bumperstickers. I don't associate with my neighbors.

2. Yup!
My DU bumper stickers are not on my car, they are on my bookshelf! When friends up here ask to see one of Will's books I warn them that it could ruin a beautiful friendship! :-)

5. That is funny
It is like the saying kids used to have to pump up their non bigot stance on the playground, "Some of my best friends are conservative." In my case that is certainly true. However, I will not let them turn bfee zealots.

4. I was when I lived in South Carolina
Fortunately my employer moved me to the Bay Area three years ago. I sometimes feel like I am in another country. It is great to be able to speak my mind and have people nod their heads in agreement.

6. Travel 75 miles east to the Valley and you feel like you are back in SC
I live in the Central Valley. One of the places in California where it is safe for the Pretzeldent to show his face.

7. my town is repuke
The whole town is very conservative, but my block in my little village in upstate New York is mostly Dems and liberals. When my new neighbors moved in a month ago, I saw a "McCall for Gov." bumper sticker on his car and asked excitedly "are you a Democrat or did you just buy your car from one?"
I was pleased to find out he is quite an activits, progressive union guy!

9. It looks like it
I'm the only one on the block that recycles. Most of the people here are working class who's time is spent trying to earn enough money to keep the house, car, and other necessities. I've got all the time in the world to bitch and think about how the country has gone to hell.

It's rednecky Warren. Lots of gun owners and eminem wannabes.

16. I believe so
right now there seems to be a competition over who can put up the biggest unsightly flag pole on the street. Looks like a fucking military base instead of a neighborhood.

18. No, there's others
but in our little town, we're mostly fairly low-key. Luckily, so are most of the knuckle-draggers. It is always a relief to go into Seattle, though, and see No Iraq War signs on every other window.

19. Not at all. There are no repukes in mine, so far as I know.
North Asheville is heavily liberal / hippie / radical. S Asheville is Biltmore -- the only Repuke precinct in the city. E and W, more mixed, but still predominantly liberal.
