About 3 months ago my Kerry sign was stolen of my front yard. I replaced it and everything has been good since last night. I was settling into bed when I heard my neighbor yell. I looked outside just in time to see 3 girls running down the sidewalk and one of them was carrying my Kerry sign, wire and all. So I ran down my steps and outside in bare feet. BTW, it was about 38 degrees at the time. I cased the girls down a block and through a backyard till 2 of them ran into a garage and one tried to hide under a jungle gym after she dropped my sign. (She was in all white and kaki pants) I confronted the girl lying down and then her friend came out of the garage. I asked her why she stole my sign and she denied doing it. I yelled at her for another minute, picked up my sign and walked home.
Still very mad when I reached home I called the police. An officer was at my house within 5 minutes and took my statement. I walked down and showed him the house. By this time there was a car in that houses driveway. The cop told me he would try to talk to someone in the house. I waked home and waited outside for 10 minutes. Then I see the 3 girls arm in arm walking towards my house with the officer 3 steps behind them. The girls appeared to be around 14 years old.
They apologized and I gave them a good lecture about my passion for politics and next time I will press charges for vandalism and theft. One girl even said that she “liked Kerry”. So natural I asked “Why did you steal my sign then”? No answer. As the three girls left in tears I talked to the officer who said that he wasn’t going to ticket them because “The Parents were so mad that he couldn’t beat whatever they were going to dish out.” So I thanked the officer for his work and I asked him “Why they couldn’t have taken the Bush sign from down the street?” We laughed and he said that “He would have helped (take the Bush sign)”!!
It must have been a sight 3 teenage girls being cased down by a 6’ 1”, 240 lb man. Surprisingly, despite the poor shape I am in I caught up to them. I am feeling it this mourning, the bottom of my foot hurts like hell from running on the sidewalk in bare feet. So all in all, I had a small victory last night in the war against sign theft.
