Do you love pus?

I love pus! Or, I've grown to love it. I squeal with joy every time I develop an abscess because that means I get another chance to lance it and watch it all ooze out!

I love to let them grow big and large. That way, if I can't lance it, I give the doctor something to marvel over.

Yes, I am clearly going nuts right now. I had to work to loosen up the incision the doc made yesterday to allow more of the gunk to drain out. And while the red streaking has dissipated and pain throughout the red streak mostly diminished, the bulk of my right hand is puffed up and slightly red and the infected part of my finger in question is purple. A small white bump has appeared below the incision that could be a new, albeit much smaller, pus pocket. The finger's mobility is understandably restricted.

Maybe I'll contact UrgentCare if this doesn't imrpove in an hour. I don't mind losing the finger (it's the ring finger and I'm gay so I can't get married) but I rather like the hand as my career rather depends on it being functional... (not for the perverse reason of course, I use my left one for that... :evilgrin: )

1. Pus-lovers are ruining DU!

All the old-timers I've spoken to say that pus-lovers were never a problem, back when DU was cool. Now pus-lovers have taken over, and things can never be the same.

2. Sounds like you may have

a staph infection. The little white bump is what makes me suspicious.

3. They took a sample for testing yesterday...

The new whitish (beige-white) area is worrisome for me too. I know I didn't try to lance the area in that spot. After spending halfa minute staring at it in detail, it's not as much an actual bump as it is a spot (my mistake from my original post) and there's a hair follicle in the middle.

The area where the pus is draining from, the skin surrounding it is pure white.

Also bothersome is how little pus came out yesterday when he sliced it open and how much more is draining today. I'm now seriously wondering if I should go in...

5. I think you should go in.

I had a friend whose hands got infected from wrapping string around the Wall Street Journal before he'd deliver them. He developed a bump on the inside of his wrist. He managed to call me and I went to his apartment. When I got there he was feverish and barely recognized me. Somehow or another I managed to get him in my car and to the emergency room. He's 6'2 and I'm 5'0. The ER Doc said if we had tried to lance the bump it would have created a full body staph infection.

They put him on antibiotics and I stayed with him for a couple of days to make sure he took his meds.

On edit: The onset of how quickly he became delusional was very fast!

13. I genuinely might...

To date, I've had larger abscesses that had gone untreated for 2 weeks - without fever. I once had one the size of an EGG in my left armpit. Miraculously, I did not end up with anything life threatening.

I will call them this afternoon if things show any sign of getting worse. (I could call them now telling them how the streak is gone but the hand is now puffy and red... and some joint stiffness, but given the location of this wretched abscess that is to be expected I suppose... though after they cut the egg-sized one last year, I surprisingly quickly regained mobility...)

I told the nurse the symptoms (another long story) and I now just checked my temperature. I do have a fever of 99 degrees (my normal temp is 97.2). But all things considered, I don't think I'm improving...

7. Ugh! I've seen more pus than I care to

I used to work at a veterinary clinic and cats with infected wounds would come in and pus would literally shoot out of them if you touched near the wound. And I'm not talking about a tablespoon or so, what would amount to cups of it. That's the first thing I thought of when I read the title to this thread. Gee thanks Hypnotoad!

The wounds were mostly bites from other cats -- Lesson: keep them indoors!

9. You can keep them indoors and they'll still get

an abcess if you have more than two. All it takes is for one cat to bite another, break the skin a little and it can be brewing ground for an abcess. All of my kitties over the years have been indoor kitties and I've had to treat several abcesses. Not a fun thing to do!

12. I meant that fights between cats are more likely

to be vicious and more likely to happen outdoors between strangers. Also, if injured they tend to hide and may not come home right away, making the resulting infection worse. I have 3 cats and they fight like, well, cats. :) Thank god no one ever gets seriously injured.
