Dang - bad doggy news on the home front
Edited on Sat May-15-04 10:32 AM by HEyHEY
Last night I posted about how my parents had adopted a two-year-old boxer. Well it actually was YESTERDAY they did so. Anyway, unfortunatley they can't keep her. We have a cat, and most dogs usually come and try to play with otis and take a bat in the nose thus setting the tone for a decent arrangement. Usually the cat will then be pretty okay with the dog. Well last night my folks were expecting that to happen....but long story short I guess this dog doesn't take shit off cats because she flipped out and went straight for the cat snapping and growling.......the cat hasn't come out from under the bed since last night....so as much as the dog is lovely...she's gotta go. I think my Dad is a bit upset, he really liked her and getting a Boxer (he owned two when he was younger) was kinda his mid-life crisis.....oh well
EDIT: THe dog was adopted from my sisters friendss who have become allergic to her...so the dog will go back to them, and not to a shelter.

1. Please don't take the dog to a shelter.
Because she won't have a chance unless she is adopted within a few days.

But all the shelters in Vancouver are no-kill anyway. The dog was adopted from a friend of theirs who found out they are allergic to dogs.

So I guess it'll go back to them, unless the dog and cat can get along today.

3. Time?
Don't know if your cat-dog situation is the same, but with my dogs...

Had the male first. Brought home a female. I had never had more than one dog at a time. In the one week they were killing each other. Gave the female to some friends. A couple of years later brought the female back and they went on in prideful companionship and parenthood. It was actually touching once when I took them to a poolhall and the female was spooked by the noise and she curled up against the male for "protection".

Give the cat away-------------JOKING!!!! JOKING!!!!!!!!! Around here being anti-cat is about as bad as being a wingnut.

9. Glad to hear that Vancouver shelters are no-kill.
Most of them here in the US are high-kill shelters and millions of animals die every day.

4. Your cat is named Otis?
So is one of ours. He is a black long hair. What kind of feline is your Otis?

5. I had a 10 year old Golden Retriever when I brought home
my cat. The dog promptly went after the cat. When I got to them the cat was madly trying to climb the blinds with the dog jumping up trying to get her. We isolated the cat in one room and kept them apart. Slowly we allowed the two in the same room with us there. We reprimanded the dog and lovingly petted the cat whenever he showed any agression. If he was calm, then the dog got lots of attention and affection. It took about 6 months for us to leave them alone together without us there. We probably could have done so in tww months. Now they are fine together. Still jealous but not agressive with each other at all. It just takes time.
