Poll question: Look At Your Music Collection... Are Most Of The Artists Male Or Female?
Edited on Sat May-15-04 08:55 AM by arwalden
If you can't actually see your music collection from where you're sitting, then you can just think about it instead. ;-)

1. Male
but just the opposite for my wife's discs. My wife is a Tori Amos fanatic. I like Dido, PJ Harvey, the Breeders, and the Cocteau Twins.

3. Probably 70-30
male to female. How do you count a band like Blondie who are mixed sex?

4. I Guess You'd Count Each Performer Individually
Edited on Sat May-15-04 09:15 AM by arwalden
to come up with a sum total across the board.

I'm about 80-20 in favor of female singers... it's most evident in my collections of country and jazz and standards. But, for pop and dance artists, the mix is about 50/50.

14. it's your poll
so I guess that's a valid response, but when I think "Blondie" I think Deborah Harry, so I'd be more inclined to count them as female. Same with Pretenders (Chrissie Hynde) - or, essentially, who/what is the 'front' or most known factor of a given band.

If you're going to count each performer individually, even Joni Mitchell doesn't count as female, because she always uses lots of male players on her albums, and in her touring bands.

5. Probably 60% male - 40% female
because most of my collection is either 1) Oldies from the 60's; 2) Classical or 3) New Age.

7. Definitely male.
I'm guessing about 80-20 (more like 90-10). Some Patti Smith, a fair bit of Tori Amos,a couple of reggae singers (Marcia Griffith and Sister Nancy come to mind) and not much else in terms of solo female artists. A few bands with female members like Sonic Youth, Pulp, etc.

but yeah mostly male...

8. lots of female artists
since I played in an all female punk band at one time. I have lots of women's music and jazz. But I also have lots of male music stuff as well.

10. 99% Male.
Chicks just aren't credible in Hard Rock and Metal. Wendy O. Williams and Doro Pesch are the exceptions.

27. What?!! Chicks aren't given a chance in Hard Rock and Metal.
There is still sexism here for I have played Hard Rock and Metal in the 80's in Central Illinois. Between my bass player and I (both women) we drew a huge following. Could we record, even though PAYING for it? No! Male ownership of all recording business in the area would NOT DO IT! That's why I moved out here, to Seattle. I never did 'make it' playing my own music, but I do feel that I helped create the surge in women's music in the 90's. So there!

12. I have joint custody of the CD collection
Total is probably 75-80% male, but the ones I listen to the most are about 75% female.

15. I'd say slightly more male
mostly because there are/have been more males making music over the past forty years.

But if I were to write up a quick list of artists/bands I like, it would tilt female, because I do tend to listen to them more;

Jomi Mitcehll
Jeff Beck
Pretenders
Dar Williams
Tori Amos
Tower of Power
Lucinda Williams
Steve Earle
Pat Benatar
EmmyLou Harris

1st 10 names I rattled off.

17. Males on CD: Elvis, Beatles, Creedence, Jackie Wilson, Ray Charles, James
Edited on Sun May-16-04 03:49 AM by ForrestGump
Brown, Paul McCartney, John Lennon, George Harrison, Eric Clapton, Wilson Pickett, Roy Orbison, John Lee Hooker, The Doors, Jimi Hendrix, compilations of bluesmen, and some others I can't remember right now.

Female: um......

Billie Holiday, and I think that's about it. I have a double-CD set and, though I've had it for years, never have yet got around to listening to it.

Well, and I have kinda joint ownership of some others (e.g., Aretha, Tina Turner, as well as some male singers she was primarily interested in), but most were basically my wife's and I rarely listened to them unless she played them.

I like a lot of female singers, from Dolly Parton to Mahalia Jackson, but I guess I favor male singers more, in general.

EDIT: oh, yeah...Heart, too

18. perhaps you should redo the poll with these choices
Edited on Sun May-16-04 01:23 PM by lyrical di
Female and I am female
Male and I am male
Female and I am male
Male and I am female
Mixed and I am female
Mixed and I am male

You see, I have this theory and those of us who like to sing along tend to buy in our own voice range/gender. I have primarily female.
Since I have 5 males in this house, I buy many male groups so they can sing along.
My wish list and shopping cart at Columbia House is full of female groups.

20. Except me...
I CANNOT sing like a girl, I have a voice like Bob Dylan! :P So I like to sing along with the guys, find it much more suitable to my non-singing abilities! :-)

22. I'm female
but like singing along with the guys too. My CD collection isn't very broad..it's only about 3 artists but I have all their CDs..100% male, but even on the radio, I mostly like the songs with the guy artists.

But on the other side of the spectrum, one of my friends (another female) listens to almost all female artists..even buys that magazine called "Women in Rock" or something like that.

24. I own thousands of records and CDs, so it's hard for me to know its...
...exact male-to-female ratio. However, I'd guess that my collection is about 60-65% male.
