Poll question: Liberal Magazines
I'm thinking of subscribing to a liberal periodical and I can only afford one. So what should it be? Any input would be helpful.

1. We get several.
I don't have a favorite. Besides the ones you've listed, Chicago's 'In These Times' is good (www.inthesetimes.com). So is Harper's.

2. I get Mother Jones
The Nation is great too, but it's weekly, so money-wise it adds up.

3. The New Yorker
Edited on Fri May-14-04 08:31 PM by democracyindanger
Harper's would be my second, and the Nation would be third. Both the New Yorker and Harpers has much more indepth content, IMO, and Sy Hersh has been kicking serious ass in the NYer.

On edit: PLUS cartoons!

21. Agreed
I look forward to The Nation every week. It's also proven a terrific Christmas present for a couple of my liberal friends, including my dad. He insists on a renewal every year.

I found a good subscription rate online, particularly for first time subscribers and much better than on the subscription cards inside the magazine.

5. Z Magazine...
It's been out for approx. 16 years or so. For those on the left side of the spectrum it cannot be beat.

6. I would suggest something that goes beyond politics.
The New Yorker (yes, you will find conservative articles sometimes; but you can't beat Seymour Hersh) has been mentioned. I'd advise something like this -- so when you get burned out on political coverage, you can read some great stories about the arts!

8. Excellent suggestion.
The New Yorker is a very well-rounded magazine.

10. Not a bad idea
Ive bought the New Yorker before on the newsstand before and I do enjoy it. No doubt that I'd catch hell from my less than liberal family for reading such an "ivory tower liberal" magazine (in their opinions) Which might actually provide some incentive for me to get it! I love pissing off my conservative family members!

7. Harper's
Lewis Lapham writes an essay every month that is not to be missed. Great writing in his and other essays too.
It is a bargain too!

11. Harper's
Harper's is the best, but get something to supplement it (it comes once a month and is digested pretty easily). Its main articles throw out some of the coolest ideas around. If you want some food for thought, get your hands on last month's issue and read 'the oil we eat'. Great stuff.

13. I'm mad at the Progressive...
...My wife bought me a subscription like 4 months ago and it still hasn't arrived. The same thing happened when she bought me a subscription to the Nation. Hey! wait a minute. You don't suppose there is a connection there do you? (introspective HMMMMMM)

14. Bargain shopping
You could probably get two if you bargain shop for the subscription. For example, Harper's has subscription forms in the magazine that are a real bargain. If you know someone who gets Vanity Fair, they will include a subscription rate of $23 or so for a years subscription of New Yorker (excellent price).

I am sure there are other offers out there - so many wonderful publications.

20. I second the American Prospect
Founded by the brilliant and fascinating Robert Reich. Always informative, never DLC-sellout type thinking, but not prone to Mother-Jones-type hippie flakiness either. Just right for me.

And best of all it's got an exclusive Tom Tomorrow cartoon!

19. I get The Nation, Harpers and The New Yorker
all three are great, but I think Harper's is the best all around liberal political mag. The New Yorker is more expensive but comes weekly.

24. Vanity Fair has been stellar of late.
I cancelled my subscription just after the "Bush White House At War" post 9/11 photo spread, which is pukeworthy.

They've really gotten better, though, and even though it's tough to get through all the glossy ads of rich-people trinkets I'll never afford, there are excellent anti-Bush articles within.
