1. I've been listening to a LOT of oddball songs lately
Edited on Wed Aug-20-03 12:13 AM by BurtWorm
"Tiger Rag" by Les Paul and Mary Ford

"The Yip Song" by Robyn Hitchcock

"How Do We Yodel" by Riders in the Sky

"Ain't I'm a Dog" by Ronnie Self

"Do Do Do" by Commonwealth Jones

"Touch" by Willie Tax and the Lyres

And that's just the tip of the iceberg!

2. Now you have me looking for a lost CD of Hitchcock
I can't even remember the title of the CD or song I love. Am I imagining a song about a drag queen, Elvis impersonater, with a line about Napoleon? I am tired, but want to hear it now.

4. I wish I could help you
I only have Respect from 1992 and Eye from I don't when, and, alas, I've "lost" them both--i.e., they're buried somewhere in a locker in my building's basement. I hadn't listened to RH in a while until I downloaded the Yip Song from Rhapsody.com. Your song sounds like plausible Hitchcock, though. That's for sure!

6. Just found it: "Queen Elvis," here are the lyrics
People get what they deserve
Time is round and space is curved
Honey, have you got the nerve
To be Queen Elvis?

See that man who mows his lawn
He'll hang in drag before the dawn
Some are made and some are born
To be Queen Elvis

It could break your mother's heart
It could break your sister's heart
Coming out's the hardest part
When you're Queen Elvis

Justify your special ways
Justify your special ways

Getting blowjobs from the press
Oh, I'm jealous can't you guess?
I could never fit your dress
Queen elvis

Oh and I'll sculpt you
So very hard
Oh and I'll sculpt you
Til you bleed

Everybody must get stoned
All together all alone
Babbling beside the throne
Of Queen Elvis

Justify your special ways
Justify your special ways

Two mirrors make infinity
In the mirror you and me
Find out just what love could be
Queen elvis

Oh and I'll sculpt you
So very hard
Oh and I'll sculpt you
Til you breathe

People get what they deserve
Time is round and space is curved
Honey, have you got the nerve
To be Queen Elvis?

8. What a nut!
Here are the lyrics to The Yip Song:

Yip Yip Yip Yip Yip Yip Yip Yip Yip Yip Yip Yip
Yip Yip Yip Yip Yip Yip Yip Yip Yip Yip Yip Yip
Yip Yip Yip Yip Yip Yip Yip Yip Yip Yip Yip Yip
Yip Yip Yip Yip Yip Yip Yip Yip Yip Yip Yip Yip

This old man, he was flesh -- they wheeled him in upon a trolley
Vera Lynn, Vera Lynn
Draw a window on his skin now
Vera Lynn nin nin nin nin nin nin nin nin nin
Vera Lynn nin nin nin nin nin nin nin nin nin

This old man, he was next -- blindfolded to face the volley
Vera Lynn, Vera Lynn
"Love will come of all our sins"
Painted on my tail fin now
Vera Lynn nin nin nin nin nin nin nin nin nin
Vera Lynn nin nin nin nin nin nin nin nin nin

This old man persevered -- in his mind he lay with Molly
Vera Lynn, Vera Lynn
Cleanse us with your healing grin
Septicemia always wins, now
Vera Lynn nin nin nin nin nin nin nin nin nin
Vera Lynn nin nin nin nin nin nin nin nin nin

Coma high, coma low
Blood is precious, yes or no?
I believe in surgery -- and that's a fact
I believe in making it easy
I believe in surgery, but I never act
I believe in making it easy

Easy Easy Easy
Easy Easy Easy

Yip Yip Yip Yip Yip Yip Yip Yip Yip Yip Yip Yip
Yip Yip Yip Yip Yip Yip Yip Yip Yip Yip Yip Yip
Yip Yip Yip Yip Yip Yip Yip Yip Yip Yip Yip Yip
Yip Yip Yip Yip Yip Yip Yip Yip Yip Yip Yip Yip

This old man, he was gone -- he was gone and I was sorry
Vera Lynn, Vera Lynn
Down I spiral, down I spin
Forces sweetheart, I'm your twin now
Vera Lynn nin nin nin nin nin nin nin nin nin
Vera Lynn nin nin nin nin nin nin nin nin nin

Yip Yip Yip Yip Yip Yip Yip Yip Yip Yip Yip Yip
Yip Yip Yip Yip Yip Yip Yip Yip Yip Yip Yip Yip
Yip Yip Yip Yip Yip Yip Yip Yip Yip Yip Yip Yip
Yip Yip Yip Yip Yip Yip Yip Yip Yip Yip Yip Yip
Yip!

5. Fish Heads - Barnes & Barnes
REFRAIN
Fish heads fish heads roly poly fish heads
Fish heads fish heads eat them up yum

REPEAT REFAIN

In the morning laughing happy fish heads
In the evening floating in the soup

REFRAIN

Ask a fish head anything you want to
They won't answer they can't talk

REFRAIN

I took a fish head out to see a movie
Didn't have to pay to get it in

REFRAIN

They can't play baseball they don't wear sweaters
They're not good dancers they don't play drums

REFRAIN

Roly poly fish heads are never seen drinking cappuccino
In Italian restaurants with oriental women yeah

REFRAIN
REFRAIN AGAIN
REFRAIN YET AGAIN
REFRAIN ONCE MORE (with music "off")
Yeah

9. Lily The Pink
Co-written by Mike McGear (Paul McCartney's brother) when he was in The Scaffold. Reportedly it's about Lydia Pinkham.

Now here's the story--a little bit gory
A little bit happy--a little bit sad--
'Bout Lily the Pink and her medicinal compound
And how it drove her to the bad.

Ebenezer thought he was Julius Caesar
And so they put him in a home
And then they gave him medicinal compound
And now he's Emperor of Rome.

So we'll drink a drink a drink
To Lily the Pink the Pink the Pink
The saviour of the human race
For she invented medicinal compound
Most efficacious in every case.

Ripley Twinger, the opera singer,
Would take a glass for his voice to save
He rubbed his tonsils with medicinal compound
Now they break glasses over his head.

Johnny Hammer had a t-t-terrible stammer
He could hardly s-s-say a word
And so they g-g-gave him medicinal compound
Now he's s-s-seen but never heard.

Uncle Paul, he was very small, he
Was the shortest man in town
He rubbed his body with medicinal compound
Now he weighs only half a pound.

Lily died and went up to heaven
All the church bells, they did ring.
She took with her medicinal compound;
Hark the Herald Angels sing.

So we'll drink a drink a drink
To Lily the Pink the Pink the Pink
The saviour of the human race
For she invented medicinal compound
Most efficacious in every case.

10. Winchester Cathedral - New Vaudeville Band, 1966
"Winchester Cathedral, you're bringing me down
You stood and you watched as my baby left town.
You could have done something, but you didn't try.
You didn't do Nothing - you let her walk by.

Now everyone knows just how much I needed that gal
She wouldn't have gone far away if only you started ringing your bell -

Winchester Cathedral, you're bringing me down
You stood and you watched as my baby left town.

Oh voh-dee oh doh, oh voh-dee oh doh,
Oh voh-dee oh doh, doh doh doh!

(The scary thing is, I typed these lyrics from memory..........)

11. In the year 2525 - Zagar & Evans
In The Year 2525 Lyrics
Zager & Evan
In The Year Twentyfive Twenty Five
Special Offer: Get 12 CDs for FREE!

In the year twentyfive twentyfive
if man is still alive
if woman can survive they my find
in the year thirtyfive thirtyfive
ain't gonna need to tell the truth
tell no lies
ev'rything you think do and say
is in the pill you took today.
In the year fortyfive fortyfive
you ain't gonna need your teeth
won't need your eyes
you won't find a thing to chew
nobody's gonna look at you.
In the year fiftyfive fiftyfive
your arms hangin' limp at your sides,
your legs got nothin' to do,
some machine's doin' that for you.
In the year sixtyfive sixtyfive
you won't need no husband,
won't need no wife,
you'll pick your son,
pick your daughter too,
from the bottom of a long glass tube.
In the year seventyfive ten
if God's acomin'
he oughta' make it by then.
Maybe he'll look around himself and say,
"Guess it's time for the Judgement Day."
In the year eightyfive ten
God is gonna shake his mighty head,
he'll eighter say,
"I'm pleased where man has been."
Or tear it down, and start again.
In the year ninetyfive ninetyfive
i'm kind a wonderin'
if man is gonna be alive.
He's taken ev'rything
this old earth can give,
and he ain't put back nothin'.
Now it's been ten thousand years,
man has cried a billion tears,
for what he never knew,
now man's reign is through,
but through eternal night,
the twinkling of starlight
so very far away
maybe it's only yesterday
In the year twentyfive twentyfive
if man is still alive
if woman can survive they may find.

13. How about "They Don't Make Nun Name (Like that No More)"?
I heard it once on Dr. Demento. Having worn the Catholic school uniforms and having been taught by Sister Coronada and Sister Alphonse, I really could relate.

Another one I almost never hear anymore is "One, Two, Three, Red Light."

14. Take the skinheads bowling
by Camper Van Beethooven. Such a catchy little ditty...

Take The Skinheads Bowling
(David Lowery/Victor H. Krummenacher/Chris Molla/Jonathan Segel/Greg Lisher)

Every day, I get up and pray to Jah
And he increases the number of clocks by exactly one
Everybody's comin' home for lunch these days
Last night there were skinheads on my lawn

Take the skinheads bowling
Take them bowling
Take the skinheads bowling
Take them bowling

Some people say that bowling alleys got big lanes
(Got big lanes, got big lanes)
Some people say that bowling alleys all look the same
(Look the same, look the same)
There's not a line here that goes here that rhymes with anything
(Anything, anything)
I had a dream last night, but I forget what it was
(What it was, what it was)

Take the skinheads bowling
Take them bowling
Take the skinheads bowling
Take them bowling

I had a dream last night about you, my friend
I had a dream - I wanted to sleep next to plastic
I had a dream - I wanted to lick your knees
I had a dream - it was about nothing

Take the skinheads bowling
Take them bowling
Take the skinheads bowling
Take them bowling

Take the skinheads bowling
Take them bowling
Take the skinheads bowling
Take them bowling
