Are "ornamental peppers" edible?

I just bought a plant, and it's uber cool looking, but I don't know if the peppers growing on it are edible.

If so, what are they good in/on? Any ideas?

Think Thai hot peppers....hot stuff. Texas A&M landscapes with ornamental peppers, and occasionally has (or had, many years ago) problems with pepper thieves tearing up the plants. I interviewed a grounds supervisor about it at the time, and he said if they were actually able to eat the hot mofos, then they had his respect and approval.
