Windows Millennium
That's my operating system on my home computer.

Lately its been giving me a lot of problems -- the computer is only three years old.

It sucks.

How do I upgrade?

1. Go to computer software store. Ask for Windows XP Upgrade.
I think I paid around 80 bucks a while back. Just put in the CD and go!

Windows ME is a tool of Satan.

6. Not a thing.
I had to buy a "new" computer a while back, and it had Win98 on it. I just loaded up the XP, and everything was still where it was supposed to be. You might have to update drivers for certain things, but that's the biggest inconvenience.

2. Go With XP
Edited on Thu May-13-04 03:54 PM by Don_G
And use the format option for a clean install.

Win ME sucks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

On Edit: Use the NTSF file option; it's much more stable than FAT32.

7. You shouldn't lose anything
Windows XP was designed to fix the problems in 2000 and Millenium. Much more crash resisitant, media friendly and internet compatible. :hi:

12. I use XP
And I like it a lot. It's the best Windows OS I have ever used. It's well thought out and easy to use.

13. I's The Most Stable Win OS So Far
But there are plenty of hidden settings to drive you nuts and it is a little buggy in some areas.

It sure as hell beats reloading the OS into the computer every month though!

5. Anytime you upgrade an OS
you should backup your files, just in case. A big job, but worth it.
Windows ME is crap (or so I hear).

9. after you load XP, don't forget
to download all the frickin' XP patches from Microsoft's web site...I've never used ME, but my co-worker has it at home, and whereas I caught Sasser and every other virus under the sun, he has not had these problems with ME.
I had to boot off of the XP CDs to get the thing running again. XP...I don't know....

11. ME was a huge mistake
one of the worst OS's ever released. XP fixes quite a few of the issues with it, and the upgrade is usually pretty seamless. If you have a few extra bucks, buy a USB thumbdrive and back up your personal files on that before you start the upgrade, just out of sheer paranoia.

18. Sweeeeeeeeet, yes, but costs rather more...
Especially whe OS X is a variant of FreeBSD.

For any number of reasons, I can't advocate the spending of $1000 when all they need is $85.

It's up to each individual and their needs and desires. I only speak my mind, much as Sophia Petrillo would. :D

19. Your point is well taken
I live in a computer lab practically, so at times I forget that I am a very fortunate person indeed. I pay very little to nothing for most of my hardware and software, so I am obviously spoiled. Then again, I don't get to use stuff for very long - it always has to get shipped back.

26. I will admit that OS X is a very good OS and is better than Windows
But there are few circumstances that would warrant a crossover.

I crossed over to WinNT in 1997 from OS/2. I loved the change, but it had cost me $2000 in new software.

If Apple would help pay for crossover costs, even I would be highly tempted to switch.

27. As a print publishing professional
until the advent of the Adobe Creative Suite and XP, as a practical matter I used and enjoyed Macs primarily. Now that we have InDesign CS, Acrobat 6 (to make bulletproof press-ready PDFs), and OpenType, print publishing is definitely now cross-platform compatible. Oh the flame wars of yesteryear...

OS/2!! Now that's a word I haven't thought of in a little while... <sigh>

16. SuSE Linux 9.1 + Win4Lin
Win4Lin will do a better job at running WinME, and SuSE Linux is THE best distro out there, particularly for home users.

I'm buying 9.1 Pro next week come pay day. Can't wait, the new 2.6 kernel beats the snot out of 2.4.21, and I'm impressed with what 2.4.21 can do for the most part...

I'll be more than happy to give you my 9.0 set, you'd then qualify for the 9.1 upgrade edition which is 45% cheaper. (the pro version comes with the latest versions of 2000+ programs. The personal edition doesn't.)

24. Yup
Win4lin runs apps at their native speed, sometimes faster. (And I'd ran this on a pre-2.6 kernel system, kernel 2.6 is said to be blazingly fast!)

I'd used v3 and v4 and loved it.

I'm waiting for v6 to come out before buying again, though v5 has directX support and supports many apps (like TrueSpace) and nearly got me to upgrade, but I don't use truespace anymore. :-(

Needs Win9x or ME. Won't do nt/2k/xp. Yet.

Vmware will use nt/2k/xp except it's 5x more expensive and is NOT reliable. It crashes on me often.
