I made a kid cry - but it's a funny story
I took a picture of this kid's social studies project and I thought the kid said his name was "Chett" but his name is in fact "Rhett" The secreatary said after I left yesterday the kid's aunt called to tell us about the mistake...she said she could hear the kid in the background wailing away....she had to try her hardest to not breakout laughing as the kid cried "That's not my name!"

hahaha

This kid obviously needs to get a grip.

But I'll call the little guy to day and apologize and get him to come down to be the smile of the week.

18. Did you print it in the newspaper as, "Chett?"..
If my name was printed wrong in a newspaper, I'd bawl too. Other than that, call me anything by late for supper. :P

3. Kids are insane sometimes
Maybe I should say when we are kids, we humans can be insane. Your apology will mean a lot to him, I am sure. Just try to hide the grin when making it :-)

7. Yikes! 10 is a little bit old to be wailing away.
He should be old enough to understand the mistake.

I am inclined to think he is acting like a big baby.

9. Yep
By that age, when people fucked up my admittedly easily-fuckupable name, I didn't get weepy... I got MAD.

10. I am surprised that you don't understand just how important
the name is to some people. In some cases people feel that they have very little else, it is a big part of their identity. Be careful about this always and avoid an unintentional insult. This isn't the least bit funny.

13. Even though you didn't overreact, you probably still get a sour
feeling about at least a few of the more important times it happened, like when your name is misspelled in the newspaper or something when you were a kid. The fact that people remember when it happened speaks to the importance that people attach to it.

14. bah, screw that
I've had my name mangled in ways you can't even imagine. If that sends a kid into an emotional fit, I can't wait to see what happens to him when something bad actually happens. We should do this kid a favor and intentionally fuck up his name just to toughen him up a little.

Edited on Thu May-13-04 12:36 PM by Rabrrrrrr
Huh? Come on, Chett. Chett Chett. Chett is kind of like Cheetah, and in the Tarzan movies, Cheetah was a chimpanzee. Are you a little monkey boy? A little crying wailing baby monkey boy?

21. I never cried about it, but that kind of thing happened to me ALL THE TIME
And it happened in school publications, where the school district had my name, spelled correctly, on file. To be fair, this was in the days before computerized files were widely available.

Correct spelling of my first name: Nathan

Alternate spellings: Nathen (WTF?), Nathaniel (thanks, but I don't need two extra syllables), Nat (a proper nickname, but no one called me that).

Correct spelling of my last name: Teegarden

Alternate spellings, found in letters to my parents, the school newspaper, and in every yearbook (often, multiple misspellings in the same yearbook): Teagarden, Teegarten, Tiergarten, T. Garden

My senior year every senior's yearbook had their name engraved on the cover in gold. We had to fill out a card specifying exactly how we wanted it spelled. They misspelled mine anyway.

22. I remember once as a kid wailing that I misspelled my OWN name...
Edited on Thu May-13-04 12:48 PM by Misunderestimator
We were in some art class making plates, where you draw a picture and then it gets baked onto a plastic plate. I had a very difficult last name for a 7 year-old and I remembered it by remembering a word that was very close to my name, but different by one letter. I wrote the word instead of my name... and I didn't get another plate. It was very traumatic as I recall. Kids are sensitive... there's nothing wrong with that. I still get annoyed when people mess up my name.... to me it means that I am not important enough a person to them to remember it properly.

Anyway, I'm in a grumpy mood and feel like wailing right now, so you better not mess up my name.

28. What would you expect from a kid named
Rhett?

Were his parents big GWTW fans or something? Does he have a sister named Scarlett? Wait till the kid gets older, he's really going to know what suffering is.
