BHT: food preservative an effective treatment for HEP-C-AIDS ? ?
Edited on Thu May-13-04 01:10 AM by DEMVET-USMC
My investigations and self experimentation with the compound commonly referred to as BHT, or butylated hydroxytoluene ,as a treatment for hepatitis C began in 1997, as a result of reading DURK PEARSON and SANDY SHAW`S: THE LIFE EXTENSION COMPANION. I wish to state first of all that they recommend people with liver disease SHOULD NOT USE BHT. They discuss it as a treatment for HERPES types 1 and 2. As far as I know the original discoverers of BHT AS A TREATMENT for viral diseases are: Snipes, Person, Keith, and Cupp. These scientists have had their works published in numerous journals over time. Anyway, as a result of many blood transfusions < 17 units > in 1968 I contracted hepatitis C and B. I became very ill with HEP C in 1997. I felt what have I got to lose and started taking 250 mg caps of BHT 3- 4 TIMES a week to see if it would help me. It helped me a lot and I continue using it as a treatment to this day. There have been numerous papers written as to BHT`s effectiveness as a treatment for a broad range of viral diseases including AIDS, in America and other Nations. Many published in respectable publications. I have written my own thoughts on exactly how BHT readily destroys perhaps all viruses in inter cellular fluids such as blood. Simply stated ,my thoughts are that compounds such as BHT , being hydrophobic are drawn to and accumulate in structures such as viruses and generate free radical and ionic reactions inter cellularly that rapidly destroy viruses and other substances such as vascular deposits and the harmful tars that damage smokers lungs. The specifics of my reasoning would take a short book to explain. Exactly how and why these chemical reactions take place and how the cells are able terminate these reactions. I would have to do extensive referencing and such and do not feel like it right now. DIG UP BOOKS AND CREDIT AUTHORS AND SUCH. Anyway, I do believe BHT is an effective treatment for hepatitis C and many other viral diseases. ...Oscar

4. Thank You Mildred
And Live Long and Prosper. That`s a long time favorite saying for me.I just spent about 2 hours explaining my thoughts on BHT therapy, but it did not get posted properly. There quite a number of articles available online. I have had good results doing a search by typing: butylated hydroxytoluene+antivirus ;also antiviral. ...Oscar

6. would like to hear more about your experience
If you get a chance, I would like to learn more.

To be honest, I am not comfortable with Steve Fowkes, and both of the links you cite go back to his ideas. He sells BHT, so has a vested interested in saying it cures the kitchen sink.

He heavily, heavily, heavily promoted Deprenyl in the mid 1990s and this turned out to be pretty worthless. I got disgusted with his books some time ago and cleared them out of the house.

I am satisfied about the herpes claims but am uncomfortable about some of the other claims. If you can recover the post which was lost about your thoughts on BHT, I would love to read it. This chemical is certainly cheap enough in bulk, although the capsules seem to me a bit overpriced.

7. I became quite ill in the winter of 1997 and saw a doctor who asked me if
I had ever gotten any blood transfusions prior to I think it was 1996. I told him I had and he ordered some blood tests for Hepatitis B and C. They came back positive and he had them done again to confirm the results. These were the tests for anti-bodies and anti-gens. The results came back positive. This hepatitis C can be pretty nasty. At that time more Americans were dying of Hep-C than from AIDS.It very often begins to affect people decades after thier initial exposure to the virus. For one thing a person can appear to be perfectly healthy with as little as one tenth of thier liver functioning. What this means is that by the time you start to show signs of the disease your liver is 90% infested and not able to function. Those liver cells are dead. Anyway I saw the Book:The Life Extension Companion: by Durk Pearson and Sandy Shaw and bought it. After reading the chapter that deals with the Herpes viruses wich suggested using BHT as an effective treatment for Herpes, types 1 and 2. I went out and bought some 250mg capsules and began taking one per day on an empty stomach as was suggested. The doses the book discussed were considerably larger, but they also recommended people with liver disease not take BHT,so I took only one 250mg capsule per day. I often would forget to take it so I was really taking about 4 per week.I began to feel better after about 2 weeks. The Doctor I had been seeing eventially finished his residency and I was assigned a new Doctor. He did not detect any symptoms of liver disease when he examined me and he ordered that a hepatitis C-RNA test be done. This test detects the actual Hep-C viral RNA as opposed to anti-bodies and anti-gens. The results came back INCONCLUSIVE. He told me he was puzzled as he had never gotten inconcusive results before. Evidently some of the Hep-C RNA genes were present and others were not. I knew I was onto something with this BHT therapy and made sure I took it everyday. Anyway the next time I saw that doctor he ordered that the Hep-C RNA test be redone. The results came back NEGATIVE. I was now thoroughly convinced this BHT therapy was definately working for me as an effective treatment for hepatitis C. Now I wanted to know just exactly how does it work. I began studying Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, and Molecular Biology. I did this on my own with books I purchased. I have no colledge degree. I never graduated from High School though I took and passed a Test to get a High School GED Diploma or Certificate whatever it is called. One of those books is: BIOCHEMISTRY by:C.K. Mathews and K.E. van Holde. Both authors are Professors of both BIOCHEMISTRY and BIOPHYSICS. Mathews was the chairman of both those Departments at Oregon State University at the time this book was written with a Copyright date of 1990.Because many of my ideas or theories regarding how BHT therapy works center around the section Titled: METABOLISM OF INCOMPLETELY REDUCED OXYGEN [ PLEASE NOTE: the terms reduced and reduction in this context refer to reactions of hydrogen with another substance.A second but related meaning is that when a compound is reduced it gains an electron or electrons. I have to go get some work done but will continue this discussion hopefully later today. ...Oscar

8. Continuation of Reply,Re: How BHT therapy works, my theories
I will pick this discussion up where I left off in my previous reply, by quoting Mathews and van Holde`s: BIOCHEMISTRY, CHAPTER 15. The section of this chapter I will be quoting is titled: Metabolism Of Incompletely Reduced Oxygen:quote" The complete reduction of one molecule of O2 to water is a four-electron process. Oxidative metabolism continually generates partially reduced species of oxygen, wich are far more reactive, and hence potentially more toxic, than O2 itself. A one-electron reduction of O2 yields superoxide ion, O2-; an additional electron yields hydrogen peroxide, H2O2; and a third electron yields a hydroxyl radical, OH.,and a hydroxide ion. Hydroxyl radicals in particular are extremely reactive and represent the most active mutagen derived from from ionizing radiation. All species are generated intracellularly and must be converted to less reactive species if the organism is to survive".End quote. I will be skipping over some paragraphs and picking up from this section what is relevant to my thoughts on BHT therapy. Quote" In some cases the production of reactive oxygen species is not a metabolic accident, but a normal part of the functioning of a cell. For example, certain white blood cells contribute to defence against infectious agents by phagocytosis. Such cells literally engulf a bacterial cell. This event is followed by a respiratory burst, a rapid increase in oxygen uptake, stimulated by mechanisms still under study. Much of this oxygen is reduced to superoxide ion and to H2O2. These compounds contribute to killing of the engulfed bacterium. Thus, while most cells contain elaborate mechanisms to protect against toxicity of reactive oxygen species, the respiratory burst involves a deliberate and controlled production of these species." End of quote. So what does this have to with BHT therapy ? We see that all cells have of necessity evolved mechanisms to deactivate free radical and ionic reactions. Viruses are not cells and do not have this ability. Free radicals and ions are so reactive they readily destroy organic molecules. This includes bacteriums wich are cells and do possess these mechanisms to the point at wich they are overwhelmed by a substantial enough assault by such reactive entities that they are simply overwhelmed and are destroyed. Once again, viruses do not possess any such deactivating mechanisms. The fact that BHT molecules are hydrophobic forces them to be attracted to and incorporated into lipid coated viruses. This includes the AIDS and hepatitis B and C viruses along with a very many others. A simple experiment to prove this is to take a glass of water, add any vegatable oil and some BHT and shake the container. You will see that the BHT molecules become incorporated into the oil. Any oil will work such a motor oil. The raeson is simple: dipolar liquids such as water do not mix with non-polar liquids such as oils and lipids. BHT was originally created to prevent the oxidation of food that contains oils or lipids. It is also used for the same purpose for such things as gasoline. It does so because it is much more readily oxidized than the products it is added to. The reason for this is a result of the tertiary structure of the tert-butyl groups attached to the aromatic ring. The reaction order is tertiary, secondary, primary. I am tired and will end this discussion for now as it gets more complicated and I need to be alert to explain it. ...Oscar

9. If There Is No Interest In This Subject I am going to quit posting.
There seems to be no interest being shown on this thread. It takes considerable effort on my part to explain the complex principles and concepts involved and I seem to be writing to myself. I will finish with a short statement regarding this subject.Very simply stated the BHT molecules undergo chemical reactions that turn them into reactive entities capabable of hydrogen abstraction and other reactions that generate free radical, ionic, and other reactions that quickly destroy the viruses. I regret there has been no interest shown in what I consider an extremely important topic. I want all to know those Ideas that I believe are original to me have been Copyrighted by me in a booklet I wrote and had copyrighted in 1998. ...Oscar

of those ideas that are original to me. Please, if there are people out there who desire to use my work do so. Simply acknowledge me for that wich is original to me. I guess"DEMVET-USMC: OSCAR from the DU forums" will have to do. I am convinced there are right wing spies at work here in the DU forums and am unwilling to give out personal information.
