Best directors who never won Best Director Oscars?
At least three names would appear on my list:

Alfred Hitchcock
Stanley Kubrick
Orson Welles

Any others you would put on the list as well?

2. I immediately thought of Hitch and K!
Welles is another great one.

5. Four more
Martin Scorsese is conspicuous by his absence on the Oscar roster IMO.

David Lynch makes films that appeal to me but I'm unsure if he's a good director or not.

Two contempory examples who have only just started their careers and may well be Oscar recipients in the future: Paul Thomas Anderson, and M. Night Shyamalan. Both make interesting films and use the camera well. I look forward to more movies from both these men.

7. Lynch should have won for The Elephant Man,
which, while not his most personal film, is certainly his most accessible.

10. Eraserhead
The Elephant Man is well crafted movie and I agree with your assertion. Eraserhead is more memorable though.

I also have to give a hearty nod to Dune. It is most certainly flawed but it captures the atmosphere of the books IMO despite the fact that Lynch's fingerprints are evident.

8. Christopher Guest
He's a genius! His films include:
This is spinal tap
Best in Show
Waiting for Guffman
A mighty Wind!

His biting satires cut right to the heart of middle class america.

9. Rob Reiner directed Spinal Tap,
a brilliant film, but those other films were directed by Guest, and they are brilliant as well.
