How much is Democratic Underground worth to you? (PLEASE READ)

The average American spends four hours a day watching television. The average cable bill in America is $40 per month. How much time and money do you spend on television? What do you get in return? Anything?

How much time and money do you spend on movies, DVDs, CDs, books and magazines in a year? Probably hundreds of hours and hundreds of dollars.

How much money do you spend on coffee? A Starbucks grande cappuccino is $3.10 (tax not included). How many of those do you drink in a year?

How much money are you willing to spend on the things that you enjoy? How much are you willing to spend on the things you consider important?

What is Democratic Underground worth to you? Can you even put a price on this place? Every day people tell me that Democratic Underground is their lifeline. It's an oasis of sanity in a world gone completely insane.

Democratic Underground is absolutely free. If you want to spend hours of your time here, you aren't required to pay one cent. And in fact, many people do spend hours and hours here without paying anything. We like it that way, because we want our community to be open to everyone, regardless of their ability to pay.

But unfortunately, someone has to pay. Because running this place is expensive. You may not feel like donating, for whatever reason. Fortunately for you, there are other people who do donate and provide you with this place. You are reading this message right now because of their generosity.

Surely this place is worth something. It may not be worth the same to you as TV or movies or coffee. But it's got to be worth a few bucks.

BTW, thank you for providing this great forum! It's well run, the mix of posters here is great, the topics are awesome and it's a wonderful haven from the rough and tumble of Usenet.

I washed up here, pale and gasping from a near drowning online and I have to say it's GREAT!

I used to be a conservative. I toed the party line and believed that if you were poor it was because you deserved to be. Then I became disabled. I lost a good job, then another, due to my disability... and suddenly the world became a far different place.
can we reach conservative people? Not unless we talk to them, one on one, explain, demonstrate the realities of this world to them... show them the wages of cruelty and neglect and what happens when true compassion is manifested instead of indifference. But it has to be person by person, face to face, one on one.

Where does DU come into it? Simple. By having this board to come to, to refresh my batteries, to regenerate, so to speak, I know that, even when daily talking to others, immured in right wing country as I am, that I AM NOT ALONE!!

Reach out in love, reach out in light, in compassion and in caring. Reach out in comfort and in humor, but reach out, REACH OUT!

Use one hand to hold onto the person you are talking to...

That's why I donate to this cause. This is work that I believe in and discussion I believe needs to happen.
