So, Who do you like in the Preakness?

Couldn't decide whether to put this in GD or Maryland, so I put it here because it would get more eyeballs.

Praise be Allah, the greatest day of the year is quickly approaching, the annual preakness stakes and the drunken shirtless debauchery that happen out at old hilltop. Usually, I can only pick the winner of the Belmont (three years in a row), and absolutely suck on the derby and preakness (preakness probably beacuse I'm two six packs worth of wasted and watching girls kiss topless by 11:30 a.m.).

Anyway, this year I am avoiding going to the preakness stakes and will be having a simple barbecue in my backyard while forcing a barbecue attendee to run to Laurel Park to place my bets.

Who do you like? To tell you the truth, I'm wide open.

Smarty Jones is probably going to win it, but my guess is he's going to go off at even or less odds. No value in that...just ignore it.

Lion Heart probably won't do as well as he did in the derby, unless it's muddy here for the preakness. Don't think you have a winner here if it's nice outside, but will consider placing a bet if the odds are right and the mud is out.

Imperialism doesn't have the leg to go the distance.

Borrego...don't think he'll win, but I'll trifecta him with someone just for poops and giggles.

Cliffs Edge is a much better horse than he showed in the derby. My pick to win it.

Eddington. Jerry Bailey riding always makes you want to look at a horse, but probably not a winner in my book. Might trifecta him at some point.

Rock Hard Ten. Good looking horse, I know little about him.

Water Cannon. I always have to place a 5 dollar win on a local nobody, will do it again this year.

LIttle Math Man. Nothing to see here...move along.

PREACHINATTHEBAR. Bob Baffarts Horse (Anyone else thing Bob Baffart looks like Ric Flair? WHOO!). Can't count him out, but can't really count him in either.

Sir Shackleton. Nothing to see here either.

Am I the only railbird on DU? I imagine this board is pretty anti-sports and anti-gambling, so I wouldn't be surprised if everyone ignores this...

2. On a related subject, since you're there, is there a traditional alcoholic
beverage associated with the Preakness?

4. Well, I'm just a lowly infielder

And my personal drink of choice is Natty Boh (National Bohemian) for the ultimate baltimore experience (even though they're now brewed in canada or something like that).

Also, Duh, I can't believe I did't remember this...

The Black Eyed Susan is the drink of the preakness

5. Thanks, to your knowledge, is there a cocktail or highball that's
traditionally served at the race?

3. I think Imperialism can get the distance, but
I'm not sure who I'm betting on yet. I'll be rooting for Smarty, though.

Any thoughts here on the Pimlico Special? I'm thinking I'll probably go with Dynever. Based on last year's Preakness, though, Funny Cide may really like this track/distance.

6. Black Eyed Susan Day
I don't think Funny Cide can do it. To tell you the truth, I think the only reason Funny Cide won the preakness last year was that the entire field was unimpressive.

This year I'm going with Dynever though. If that horse is on, he's unstoppable. Funny cide would be in my exact though. Don't know who my third horse would be if I bet the trifecta.

7. I wanted Smarty Jones
for purely stupid reasons. I have Smarty and Jones bred horses but they are a different breed. After watching him before the race I decided he was a good bet (on TV so not too much info to go on, mainly pre race attitude). I was surprised that Imperialism did so well even though I had picked him for one of the top three. I am not so sure he can't do it now, I may stay with him for #2. In my limited knowledge I love to bet on Baffert horses. There is something about the way the guy works his horses that give them a real edge and I am guessing it has a bit to do with kindness although I could be entirely wrong about that, just a hunch. I'll probably pick Preachinatthebar for kicks. Since I don't bet money I allow myself to go with my pre race horse sense and a bit of personal superstition rather than studying race profiles.

8. anti sports and anti gambling???
Dude, all Dems I know like a good time, which includes imbibing (don't have a Dem event in my area without an open bar), most I know are big sports fans, and Las Vegas is a favorite destination spot of mine..., so don't make such broad assumptions.

I don't miss the Triple Crown Races or the Breeder's Cup, but I always watch on tv so I can jump up and down and holler in private.

Anyhow, Imperial came in 3rd, if I recall, looked like Imperial was getting a head of steam but just too late.

Smarty Jones looked like a winner though, coming around the last turn, so I think, why not??

Go Smarty Jones.
