He managed to keep the integrity of the song, which is more than I can say about most cover tunes. Also "Drift Away" came out really nice.

7. WOW. That is one brutal list....
That having been said, "Party All The Time" is freakin' genius. Eddie Murphy and Rick James?!?

Good lord, it's so unbelieveably bad that it transcends this mortal plane and passes into the sublime.

The only other 80s pop song that even comes close to matching its kitsch value is "State of Shock" by Michael Jackson and Mick Jagger.

Masterpieces of shit and I love them dearly.

11. Superman - Five for Fighting
and I would do anything for love (but I won't do that)... and here are my reasons.

Superman: I wrote a novel dealing with Superheroes, and for a time was an avid comics collector. I think their song captures the Superman dichotomy well, plus, it's fun to sing along with as I drive.

I would do...: When I was first dating my wife that song was ALL OVER THE RADIO in the UK. You couldn't use a friggin pay toilet without hearing it. So I associate that song with our burgeoning love that's led to nearly 9 years of marriage.

3. "Everybody Have Fun Tonight” — Wang Chung
6. "The Heart of Rock” & Roll — Huey Lewis and the News
15 “I'll Be There for You” — The Rembrandts
21. "Two Princes” — Spin Doctors
23." Sunglasses at Night” — Corey Hart
24. “Superman” — Five for Fighting
26. “The End” — The Doors
29. “Breakfast at Tiffany's” — Deep Blue Something
32. “Will 2K” — Will Smith
33. “Barbie Girl” — Aqua
37. “Rico Suave” — Gerardo
41. “We Didn't Start the Fire” — Billy Joel
42. “The Sounds of Silence” — Simon & Garfunkel
48. “Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da” — The Beatles

I don't think that anything by The Beatles, Simon & Garfunkel or Billy Joel belongs on that list.

There are far worse songs than any of those on the list. A few that come to mind: You're Having My Baby, The Night Chicago Died, Afternoon Delight, Muskrat Love... I could go on forever.

It's perfectly harmless! It has no pretensions! It's deliciously infectious!

I was NOT big on the whole glam thing back then (the Marines frowned on "glam,") but to this day, I like that song. It's got a good beat and you can dance to it. I give it a 92, Dick.

54. Lemme tell ya about Wang Chung
Those guys were originally called Huang Chung (the name of a Chinese reed flute), and they put out a record called "Points On A Curve" that was freaking brilliant. I'm thinking you probably remember "Dance Hall Days" ("Take your baby by the wrist / And in her mouth an amathyst"). Huge, overproduced Ultravoxy synth-pop sound, but overall intelligent lyrics and sophisticated song structures. Their sax player ripped. As a music major and life-long "semi-professional" musician, I always thought that record represented some of the best pop music had to offer at the time (1984).

Then "Everybody Wang Chung Tonight" came out and I went, "Damn, they must have really needed more money."

"The End" remains one of my favorite Doors songs. And "SHP" is much maligned, but if one understands REM's love of 60s bubble gum pop, it makes perfect sense.

Four bananas make a bunch and so do many more.

Comin' to bring you the Banana Split show
Makin' up a mess of fun, makin' up a mess of fun
Lots of fun for everyone

Tra la la, la la la la
Tra la la, la la la la

Four banana, three banana, two banana, one
All bananas playin' in the bright warm sun.
Flippin' like a pancake, popping like a cork
Fleegle, Bingo, Drooper an' Snork

Two banana, four banana, one banana, three
Swingin' like a bunch on monkeys, hangin' from a tree.
Hey there, ev'rybody, won't you come along and see
How much like Banana Splits ev'ryone can be

Makin up a mess of fun
Makin up a mess of fun
Happiness for ev'ryone
Tra la la, la la la la
Tra la la, la la la la
Tra la la, la la la la

Especially in the scene in "Apocalypse Now!" during the napalm boming.

But for the most part, all of these songs inspire loathing.

56. Those are the three that seem out of place to me
"Shiny Happy People" was a bit of an anomaly for REM, but hey, it's an REM song. "Sounds of Silence" is pretentious and bombastic, but this is true of MUCH of S&G's catalog (don't get me wrong, I love S&G, many of their songs defined that era).

"The End" is just wrong. I'm sorry, but they are wrong. In the first place, it wasn't a "pop" song... that was one of the tracks on the Doors debut that didn't really get much airplay (I remember, I was growing up listening to San Francisco radio at the time, and I'd never heard that cut till my brother bought the record). I can understand someone criticizing it for being sick and twisted, but that doesn't seem to be the criteria for this list (more like, "corny and annoying"). And when Coppola included the cut in the Apocalypse Now soundtrack, it became iconographic as far as I'm concerned.

Pooh!

44. Where does this "Blender" Magazine
get off listing crappy pop songs?

Have any insipid popstars performed overproduced songs about consumerist kitchen utensils?

Of course, I really can't argue with their taste too much. These may not be the FIFTY WORST popsongs, but they would all fit on a list of the 100 worst.
