Make your dream pub
Over my months of lurking and very rare posting I’ve noticed very good tastes in beer preferences among the DU crowd. I’m curious, what are some of the things you enjoy at your favorite bar/pub? This is intentionally very open-ended and made for discussion about what surroundings you like when you enjoy your favorite brew.

I’ll start – I enjoy small, local bars with a large selection of beers on tap from around the globe, with a killer jukebox of soft Indie music, and comfortable seating to have stimulating conversion with friends. Oh, and if it has a dartboards and shuffleboard, it can’t be all that bad. Double oh, if they’d have Samuel Smith’s Oatmeal Stout, I’m pretty sure I wouldn’t leave.

1. I like your style...

I would add a good ratio of men and women, a really hilarious bartender, and a bunch of turtles in fistanks. Turtles bring happiness.

...but keep 'em decent folk, and make 'em quick on the tap.

"U.G.L.Y." bartenders are best ya know.

2. i like
dimly lit, maybe with christmas light strings - wooden interior with writing and stickers on the walls, and they have to carry the Unibroue line of Canadian beers, of which La Fin du Monde is my personal favorite.

Edited on Tue May-11-04 11:02 PM by DarkPhenyx
Replace it with German, Irish, and English brews, a good selsction of domestic micros, live music that isn't too loud.

Yeah...that'll do. :)

I'll say American beer sucks worse than Canadian beer.

Now if ya'll wanna throw in the micro brews and completely throw off the scale then fine. Have at it.

9. I used to haunt a shithole called "Jakes Crossing"
It went through a four month reno period where in the bathroom was nothing on the wall but plywood. Over time it became littered with graffitti...not just stupid shit either....I was acutally the first to hit it...anyway..the day I walk in and saw the new tile up..I was sad..

With about an inch of poly/wax on the bar itself, and a hun'erd years old. Water rings in the surface you couldn't buff out with a power tool...

Yeah. Tha' be it.

and smoke. I'm sorry, but fer a proper pub ya gotta have smoke. Not so it chokes ya, but an aroma of good pipe will do. Ya.

19. I like the music to be low enough so I can talk with people...
or interesting enough for me to want to listen. A large selection of brews on tap would be great, but I'd settle for 3 or 4 and a respectable sampling of bottles.

The pub that specializes in Lambics will have my heart... :loveya:

What is Lambic, you ask?http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/pvosta/pcrbier1.htm

29. One thing I do not want
is "minimalist" furnishing in a pub that more often than not just looks like something from IKEA.

I prefer decent local pubs with great regular drinkers, lots of well kept real ale, lots of funny continental lagers, a good jukebox, TV sport and a great landlord.

I guess I'm just a bit demanding really.

30. The Klo is a fun bar
It's in Berlin. "Klo" is German slang for "toilet."

They have a one-mark-per-group cover charge--the owner bought a coin-operated doorlock off a pay toilet and put it on the front door. (The restroom didn't have a door at all.) Or you can beat on the door real hard and yell "let me in, dammit" and they will, but where's the fun in that? Each table has two toilets (not plumbed in, naturlich) sitting in front of it. There's a huge fishing net hanging from the ceiling that's full of plastic toys they bought at garage sales. Lots of weird crap hanging on the walls. It's dark and cramped and there's so much smoke floating in the air you'd think the place is on fire. Loud music. Great beer, but it's in Germany and bad beer is illegal. Every spirit they can get their hands on.

If I was going to open a tavern, it would be a large place that would have a stage for live music, four small bars (front left, front right, back left, back right) instead of one big one--more personnel expense, but easier access for the patrons--a beer list that did not contain Budweiser, a really good sound system, and good food. But probably no toilets in front of the tables.
