served 1966 - 1968; spent almost the entire year of 1967 in Nha Trang, Vietnam. Achieved the rank of Spec 5 (equivalent to a 3-stripe sergeant, for non-military types). I worked as the secretary/stenographer to the Assistant Chief of Staff, G2, at Headquarters, I Field Force, Vietnam. A rather heady and fascinating position for a 21 year old from the mountains of north Georgia. After rotating back to the states, I was stationed at Fort George G. Meade, Maryland, between Baltimore & Washington DC, just in time for the riots following the assassination of Martin Luther King, Jr., in April 1968.
