7. Uhh...faith?
I was an atheist for a long time. My nonfundie grandmother took me to see a Passion play four and a half years ago.

Something went on in my head that I cannot to this day explain...something clicked. I got very strong flashbacks of walking through drug-addict infested alleys during fourth grade because it was safer than taking a conspicuous route (bullies). The play made me think, "Wow, I should have been found dead in a gutter in Phoenix years ago."

Thus on 7 August 1999, I became a Christian. I did not go to church regularly (transportation issues) until I started college. However, now that such issues are resolved (except during summer), I go regularly.

It was only a couple of weeks ago, after I had had the time to take the pulse of the church, so to speak, that I committed to baptism. I had been putting it off.

Christianity gives me a very powerful sense of hope, a sense that my suffering had a purpose. It allows me to use this experience constructively (I want to become a teacher, primarily to help other kids in similar situations), instead of doing something that is not so helpful. Looking back, I'm surprised I didn't commit suicide years ago.

Those experiences were a long time ago; I'm fine now. Such is my life story:)

I need to get a haircut, too. I hate my hair; I wish I was bald. But I'm young enough for people to think I'm a skinhead if I get rid of it entirely.

been a christian since birth, grandfather is a pastor, been to church almost every week since i can remember, but... i guess i just dont get it... ive been through some hard low points in my life and religion didnt seem to provide an anwser for me. i donno why i kept going, but i just knew there would be something better later on. im trying to believe, but its just something i cant force. nothing that has happened in my life has been beyond the realm of coincidence... and considering the direction of the country and world... youll understand if i find it hard to have faith.

i donno... to each thier own i guess. if you believe, more power to you, but i dont know what to believe really

17. Yes, I understand
Atheism didn't work for me. I guess Christianity doesn't work out very well for you, either. To each his own.;)

Have you ever considered that you might be stale in your faith because (speculation here) your family shoves it down your throat? I'm inferring this because you said your grandfather is a pastor and you were "born into" Christianity. Coerced religion is no religion at all to me...

very liberal infact.

while they did make me attend church, they let me form my own opnions about it. im not sure what the reason is, it might be something along those lines, but i doubt it. who knows... i want to believe, but somethin just isnt there for me.

23. Hmm...
ive been through some hard low points in my life and religion didnt seem to provide an anwser for me.

Religion didn't provide an answer for me either, at the time my "low points" occurred, as I was a total atheist back then. However, becoming a Christian forced me to reexamine the events of my life. Perhaps you have reached this juncture.

Feel free to PM me if you want to chat some more.

I think if we have a heaven we should be judged by actions and not by worship. I try to be good to all the people around me. If that isn't good enough the end result a place I don't want to go.

27. why even care about heaven?
why not be a good person for the sake of being one. is it not its own reward? is not being a good person enough of a reward in the end?

my idea is... no matter what you believe, just make sure you live your life so that you can bear to look at yourself in the mirror.

The only place that's fun to hang out at night is DU, everywhere else on the internet I go for information and over here the threads are slow and there is like maybe 3 or 4 people in the lounge the entire night. Also TV bores me after awhile and my 2 video games are no longer fun, I mastered them.

Collectively, the links contained therein can offer about an hour's worth of edutainment. (Well, quite a bit of it is serious, actually, but some is humorous parody...)

24. Midnight by the Pacific
Just got back from a wedding a little while ago - what a great day! Beautiful weather, bride, guests, mood, chapel (Norwegian's Seamen's Chapel and Men's Club in San Francisco), dress (hers and mine) ... It was just wonderful. People can be just fabulous sometimes!

Also, congratulations on your decision. I was raised Roman Catholic, and so had no say in my baptism. I am glad you are doing yours as an adult by choice. (I feel like I should make a full disclosure - I am a hard atheist and have been so since the age of about 15, 20 years ago).

Edited on Sun May-09-04 06:08 AM by fortyfeetunder
the prof gave this take home exam on Thursday AM and it was due this coming Tuesday. Since I have a paper still due to this guy, decided to take a halt on finishing the paper and finished the exam a few minutes ago. Bloody easy. Now I have to finish the paper...do that today...

Actually my peak hours for academic work is 1-5 AM. However that sucks when I also work FT.
