3. Not yet...but
I thought Dylan doing a spot was pretty much the end until I saw Hart..I don't know what else to say.

It almost makes me wonder what would happen if Jerry were still alive, or Lennon.

4. At least Mickey Hart is hocking Yahoo! and
not lingerie!

When the Dead sell their MUSIC for a commercial, then I'll be upset. Most people would not be able to pick Mickey Hart out of a police lineup.

5. OH pul---eeze....

We're all not as pure as you obviously!! If Dylan wants to hock himself to make money, the man can do it. It's a free country!

6. I agree...
We all sell our services to make money. Unless you are independently wealthy you have to make the cash.

Even if you've got some money it never hurts to have more.

If someone offered me money to let them use a song I'd say do it.

7. But, that's the point, Dylan and Mickey Hart ARE wealthy
already. Why whore yourself for more?

8. Whore yourself...
That has such nasty connotations. I don't think you're whoring yourself to sell a product or service.

Why do musicians continue doing music and concerts if they are already famous and rich? That's basically the same thing, I think.

Also, Dylan may be well known to our generation but how well known is he to the younger one? This gives him an opportunity to get his music out to another group that may not ever hear anything but rap music.

I think we're going to have to agree to disagree on this.

10. Will, I have no problem disagreeing on this, and maybe I am
kind of radical on the subject, but yes, I feel that there is an inherent difference between promoting music/art/writing that is from the sweat of your brain, from which the profits return to you and your organization and making commercials for multinational interests written by faceless drones in cubicles on Park and Lexington Avenues and having to put up with their "morality clause" (which you KNOW they had to sign) and other such bullshit so that some more fat cats can have another girl/boy friend in the Bahamas and the stock holders make a few cents and the employees worry about their jobs being sent to fucking India all day.

Capiche?

But, they have to look at themselves in the mirror every day. I wish them well.

Best regards

Bill

14. IMHO, most musicians make music because that
is the essence of their being. Yes, for some it enriches them beyond belief but I suspect that there are those who would feel the NEED to make music even if it didn't pay the bills.

12. Why make judgements.....

...as far as Dylan, anyway, he's never been consistent about much of anything. So any expectations you place on him...are ill advised!!!

..but then you didn't write THIS song. I for one, remember what this song symbolized to a generation. Read the lyrics put in the context of when it was written and now think of it as applied to a wireless phone service. I still say, YUCK!!! and I've consistently given Dylan the benefit of the doubt over the years. It's the song thats a problem for me. I really had no major problem with the use of "Love Sick" for the Victoria's Secret" commercial, the subject matter of the song is entirely different. As for Hart's spot, I'll withhold judgment for now,

----
Come gather 'round people
Wherever you roam
And admit that the waters
Around you have grown
And accept it that soon
You'll be drenched to the bone.
If your time to you
Is worth savin'
Then you better start swimmin'
Or you'll sink like a stone
For the times they are a-changin'.

Come writers and critics
Who prophesize with your pen
And keep your eyes wide
The chance won't come again
And don't speak too soon
For the wheel's still in spin
And there's no tellin' who
That it's namin'.
For the loser now
Will be later to win
For the times they are a-changin'.

Come senators, congressmen
Please heed the call
Don't stand in the doorway
Don't block up the hall
For he that gets hurt
Will be he who has stalled
There's a battle outside
And it is ragin'.
It'll soon shake your windows
And rattle your walls
For the times they are a-changin'.

Come mothers and fathers
Throughout the land
And don't criticize
What you can't understand
Your sons and your daughters
Are beyond your command
Your old road is
Rapidly agin'.
Please get out of the new one
If you can't lend your hand
For the times they are a-changin'.

The line it is drawn
The curse it is cast
The slow one now
Will later be fast
As the present now
Will later be past
The order is
Rapidly fadin'.
And the first one now
Will later be last
For the times they are a-changin'.

11. I see it more of the anti-establishment 60's icons....
going establishment.

I understand these guys are trying to get their music out to a new audience, but for all the tape/cd trading among Dead fans and I am sure Dylan fans,it will still happen.
