What's the WORST fast-food place (excluding McDonald's)???
Edited on Fri May-07-04 09:12 PM by northwest
The fast-food joint (INCLUDING pizza places) that you would NEVER want to eat at in a million years???

And, we're not counting McDonald's, because they speak for themselves on this case.

And I'm NOT looking for answers from (elitists) here like "Oh, ALL fast food sucks". I want opinions from people who have no problem with some fast-food places, and have their own personal preferences. NOT anybody who hates ALL fast-food. I'm not looking for that type of answer.

As for me, the worst joint probably has to be Hardee's. It's nothing but fried grease and grease balls. The burgers have no taste, and their fries SUCK. Now, I have kind of a soft spot for crappy food, but by God, I want my food to have TASTE, dammit!!!

Thank God they're phasing those places out around my area (they closed down a few Hardee's places in my city). But there's still a whole bunch of those commercials on TV, regardless.

So, what's the worst burger/chicken/pizza joint in your opinion???

They are pretty bad but when one is near broke before payday...it's a very cheap meal that's for sure. I used to get bean burritos for very little money.

80. I like them and Del Taco, especially when I'm
traveling long-distance on freeways. Certainly better than most other offramp offerings, not that I ever confuse either outlet much with 'real' Mexican food. Cheap, filling, and arguably higher quality than many other choices -- places like Chik Fil A and, especially, Subway are even better choices from the quality and not-so-bad-for-you standpoints.

Used to absolutely detest Taco Bell food, back in the '80s, but somewhere in the '90s they improved their food.

If you don't want to go to work or school tomorrow, eat White Castle tonight, and you'll have lots of lovely diarrhea in the morning. Then you can call in sick.

and since it was all that was open the other night I stopped in one.

The mozzarella sticks were fried with the fish, and tasted like fish, and the sliders were inedible.

I mean completely inedible. Took one bite out of each, and threw them away. Not too long ago I could actually get them down.

And that stuff is not cheap!

48. You are correct, sir!
As long as we don't expect too much from it, fast food can be our friend!

I love Taco Bell. I also love Mexican food (yes, I am aware there's a huge difference).

I love White Castle. I also love burgers out on the grill.

As long as we view it for what it IS, and not as a substitute for something else, fast food is yummy!

22. KFC is foul.
It's made from some genetically modified creature that lives an unfortunate life only to be slaughtered, coated in dirt, fried in an oil-like substance, and fed to people with poor taste in food.

A second place goes to Walmart generic food courts. The smell alone is enough to make small children weep.

My favorite fast food is Wendy's. The salads are pretty good. I know McDonalds is shaping its cardboard recycling into salad-like products, but it will never catch up to Wendy's.

I would help unpack and stock the produce and meat when it came in at night. I can honestly say that Wendy's DOES use high quality ingredients for it's food -or at least it did; that was 20 some years ago, and Dave Thomas lived fairly close to our restaurant, so things had to be top notch at all times. Maybe there's another ex-Wendy's employee out there with a more recent experience?

60. Sandwiches made by people who do not know how to make a sandwich
I made the mistake of going into a Subways a couple of years ago wnd ordering the "A1 Steak & Cheese" sandwich they were promoting at the time.

It was a good thing I didn't take my eyes off the person making it. The veggies, OK. The steak, OK. The cheese, OK. The A1...well, that's why I came, isn't it.

But he also wanted to put mayo, mustard, oil and vinegar, salt, and pepper on it. They have the bottles turned upside down and ready to squeeze before you can yell "NO!" (Although I have been to Togos and they will occasionally try to do the same thing to a meatball sub...go figure).

Plus, I've had about all of Jared I can take. 14 minutes, 58 seconds and counting. If you buy the CD/DVD "Triumph The Insult Comic Dog: Poop With Me" there is a segment in the DVD where they have Jared and the Dell "You're Gettin' A Dell" Dude who got fired over his pot bust having an insult match on stage. Pretty sad.

HUGE difference in cleanliness from one franchise to the next. the gross ones can be truly scary.

but i grew up with an arby's nearby and it was IMMACULATE. the owner had a huge amount of professional pride and really went all out. most franchise owners act like slumlords, but this guy acted as if his personal reputation was on the line with each sandwich.

I've never actually eaten at a White Castle. I walked into a store, was assaulted by the reek of diarrhea and walked straight out without ordering anything.

So based on stores were I actually got the food down, KFC. Especially since Popeye's taught us all what real biscuits taste like.

I don't hate fast food, but I'd only eat at Jack in the Box or Popeye's. They're the cut above, IMHO.

42. Papa John's, the epitome of overrated
I tried it several times in Salt Lake City during the '02 Winter Games and will never spend another quarter on that tasteless puny crap. Ten bites and their "large" pizza was conquered.

They even stuck a little sauce container inside the box that was lounging atop the pizza twice when I opened it. I wanted to chase down the driver but it was too icy and he had already bolted.

Hardees has been taken over by Carl's Jr. and seems dramatically improved, so I really don't understand the barrage of complaints. The menu is completely revamped, and every time I visit a Hardees in the southeast it tastes like the same charbroiled Carl's Jr. quality to me.

The Whopper is unrivaled so Burger King will always hold the trump card there. Wendy's is excellent overall, but they insist on putting cheese on my burgers so I'm boycotting again. Last week I found a Tommy's in Barstow, CA, same reasonable prices and overpowering chili taste that I remember from my college days at Beverly and Rampart in Los Angeles.

At the local Papa John's (Portland, OR suburb) that I tried a few times several years ago, you had a hard time trying to find the peperoni on a peperoni pizza.

The last straw was when I brought in a coupon for a pizza, they said the coupon was no good & then gave me a pizza with the EXACT SAME COUPON taped to the top of the box.

It only classifies as fast food because it's fast when it comes back up.

For those of you who have never had the misfortune to eat in one, they're resturants mostly found in and around service stations in England. Although their fry-ups aren't that bad, their standard food is cold, fatty and generally either in that state between liquid and solid.

57. ARBY'S,
no question. Every Arby's I've ever been in has had horrible food, which is why I never go there anymore. ALL of their sandwiches, not just the roast beef ones, taste like warmed-up years-old cardboard and entire bottles of sauce just can't disguise it. YUCK!

68. Yeah, and the slowest service in the world.
I know how hamburger is supposed to taste, and that crap on a bun ain't it. No wonder so many of them went out of business in Iowa.
Crappy food, crappy service.

62. I'd have to go with the Wal-Mart/K-Mart generic food courts
I have NEVER summoned up the courage to eat anything from there and I'd sooner eat at any brand-name fast-food chain any day.

Speaking of McDonald's itself, that chain was already in Hungary and (at the time) Yugoslavia when I traveled through both countries in 1990. The one thing I will always remember is going to the McD's in Belgrade in the morning and seeing young Serbs eating burgers that early in the day -- not even McD's breakfasts like Egg McMuffins! And every time I ate a meal at McD's in Budapest I had to go to the bathroom very soon afterwards.

:puke: :puke: :puke: :puke: :puke: :puke: :puke: :puke: :puke: :puke: :puke: :puke: :puke: :puke: :puke: :puke: :puke: :puke: :puke: :puke: :puke: :puke: :puke: :puke: :puke:

Living in SF where there are tons of burrito and shawarma places every bit as cheap and fast as any "fast food" chains, there is absolutely no reason for me to eat fast food ever.

75. Yeah, but DC hot dog stands rock!
Better than NYC for some reason. When I was an intern for a certain junior senator from California a few years back, that was my bargain lunch (as I was an UNPAID intern, of course...) Something like 2 bucks for a dog, a bag of chips and a can of soda. Mmmmm, mmmm good.

And no, I don't want to hear what's in them, thankyouverymuch... ;-)

Not nationwide, not even many franchises in CA.

They serve burgers and Phillipine "comfort food". Absolute PUKE. Several orders of magnitude worse than KFC, BK, Taco Bell, or any other place mentioned in this thread.

You CAN NOT EAT THIS "FOOD". One bite of their "burger" and I spit it out. One LOOK at the Palabok, and I almost fainted.

There is not a worse FF joint on this planet.

72. Fun with fast food.
Isn't it Arby's who advertises Market Fresh sandwiches? Anyway, I am driving by an outlet in Colfax, WA and on the marquis they have "Come in and try our MF Turkey Sandwich." So I pull into the drive-thru and ask for one of those MotherF***ing Turkey Sandwiches. Then I left. Right away.

It made me even more angry that I can't go there (none in the greater DC Metro area). Sucks cause I like the food and I'd love to support such a great company. Hopefully they will come farther east soon.

85. I don't mind McDonald's milkshakes when I'm pressed for cash
and Burger King's fries are mass-produced hit/miss items. there used to be this marvelous mom-&-pop greek/arabic junk food restaurant in houston, and they served the BEST falafel, the BEST gyros & shwarmas, and damned well edible fries, to boot. and the desserts, too! sadly, the place burned down about three or four years ago. do any houstonians remember the place? Gyro Gyro's on Westheimer? in its place now sits an empty lot. there was another place not terribly far away, along Shepherd, that had a reputation for City's Best Eggrolls.

89. The worst fast food joint in the world
is Bud's Drive-In in St. Maries, Idaho. They've been making the same shit the same way for 54 years. Bud died 22 years ago and they made a deathbed promise to him never to change a thing--especially his prized recipes. They had to close for three months while they were rebuilding because the state board of health closed them down and condemned the structure, but when they reopened it was business as usual. The place even looked the same, except for the probably-temporary lack of cockroaches.

Did you ever eat a burger that smelled like Vitalis hair oil when you opened the little glassine envelope it was in? That's Bud's specialty. Bud's is the choice of St. Maries residents who wear ill-fitting dentures, because you don't have to chew the food--it just slides right down.

I ate there once in the 1990s and got a greasy coke. In a paper cup. That doesn't just happen.

91. Taco Hell horror story
Don't read if you throw up easily:

I used to love Taco Bell, then one day I ordered a "cheesy crunch gordita." When I opened it up, it was cold. The cheese was unmelted, and there was a creamy-white liquid on top.

Now, I don't think I have to tell you what that liquid was, I think you can figure it out.

Worse yet, they wouldn't refund it.

92. Billy's capsule review of major fast food chains....
In no particular order :) Top rating: *****

KFC - ** "Kitchen Fresh" Chicken? Hell's kitchen, maybe. If you really need a grease fix this stuff delivers.

Taco Bell - ** This place used to be pretty decent (6-7 years ago). But they found ways to get cheaper and cheaper ingredients and now it is horrid.

Taco Bueno - *** Much better than Taco Bell. Food actually tastes of other than preservatives.

Taco Cabana - **** The best tex mex fast food out there. Somewhat variable tho, step away from the queso, go for the chicken flameante!

Whataburger - *** Decent burgers especially if you like your beef patty wafer thin. Don't look at the oil in the frying machine, you will wish to skip the fries if you do.

Jack in the Box - **** As fast food goes, it doesn't get a lot better. Decent burgers, horrible guilty-pleasure tacos, food is generally fresh which is not always the case at other outlets. Plus, their ads are the least annoying of anyones :)

Pizza Hut - *** This pizza actually tastes ok but there must be enough salt in it to pickle you. I usually drink about 3 gallons of water an hour after eating this stuff. Guess it helps prevent spoilage :)

Papa John's - ** I HATE restaurants that insist on putting sugar in every damn thing (since I can't eat sugar and don't like it in my pizza anyway) Sugar in the crust, sugar in the sauce. Puke.

Steak and Shake - *** A welcome change with decent food.

McDonalds - * Eating this stuff is a last resort. If I have to have something to eat and I'm on the road and there is nothing else, well it beats a bag of chips :)

Burger King - * I can't put my finger on why I hate this place, but I will take the bag of chips before I'll eat here.
