1. In high school

Back in the Reagan era, I made a habit of calling the WH collect from the pay phone at the library every day after school. I'd always claim to be "Ron Jr." which isn't entirely untrue - my name is Ron. They never accepted the charges, strangely enough.

I had a direct-dial number, though.

I said "Hello, Mother! How are you?" --- And she replied "Oh, Allen! It's good to hear from you!"
