I'm stunned that m-jean03 ended up banned from DU. Totally stunned. I can't possibly think of a stupider reason to get onesself banned than this.

Are there times when the mods overreact? Of course there are.

Are there times when the mods lock things that don't need to be locked? Of course there are.

The moderators are human. They don't make the rules -- they just enforce them. It's a hard thing to do, but they do an amazing job. And in exchange, they get no pay plus a bunch of grief from members which is invariably "just a joke."

Until you have walked a mile in their shoes, I think you need to cut them some slack. If you think they fucked up, come to me directly. Don't start threads to complain about it.

But here's the stupidest fucking thing that someone can do on DU: If an admin tells you, in no uncertain terms, to cut the crap or else get banned -- Then you should probably pay attention. Because like it or not, our prestige and our word are on the line. We don't threaten people with banning lightly. When we do it, we mean it.

So, m-jean03 shouldn't be particularly surprised that her account got shut off. Because we told her exactly what would happen if she kept thumbing her nose at us. The choice was hers.

Having said that -- we are reasonable people, and we are strong believers in second chances. We've already opened a dialogue with her. If she wants to come back, she is welcome to do so, and we have told her precisely what she needs to do to return. Again, the choice is hers.

In my defense, I will say that my goldfish DID just die. But perhaps I alluded far too much to something else on purpose.

If you check my thread in ATA, I agree that being a mod is a tough job.

EarlG did apologize to her for a misstatement he made in the Ask the Administrators forum. But apparently that was not enough to avert a continuation of this "whole mess".

But at this point I do not think we owe her an apology, nor do we expect one from her.

If she had approached me privately when she felt she was mistreated, then I would have been happy to look into it. But she chose another approach, which did not work out so well.

20. You are correct that being a mod is a tough-ass job, Skinner

I have never been one (wrong kind of temprement..if you are still interested in me, with all my baggage, as a mod post-November...too much to do in life & w/the Kerry campiagn during that time to give DU the proper attention...PM me when you need a new slate of mods then) but during the infrequent times I've dealt with them I've gotten a flavor of just how tough the job is, often caught between a rock and a hard place.

You guys do a great job under difficult circumstances and under DOS Attacks, as well as other Freeper assaults.

Oh, and I really really REALLY hope that you guys can keep DU running acceptably well on "Election Day". Watch out for coordinated DOS attacks.

23. Although Im not 100% sure what happened...

I hope that, after a cooling off, she'll want to come back, and the admin will consider a second chance for her, although I understand why they may not give a 2nd chance.

I dont get why so many people get themselves thrown out, its just so stupid, and it sucks bc many of them contribute alot to this board, yet do stupid things in the end. (just a little rant).
