Free/Open Source NewsReader (to view the DU news feed)
Edited on Mon May-03-04 08:36 PM by BattyDem
If you want to view the DU Latest Breaking News RSS/XML feed, but you don't have a newsreader, you may want to check out FeedReader. It's free and it's easy to use. :)
By the way ... thanks Elad! I love being able to get DU's latest headlines along with my other news. It's so convenient. :toast:

On edit - Oops! I forgot the link - http://www.feedreader.com/

2. Umm...which one? And what is RSS/XML feed anyway?
I only know how to operate Winblows and play games...not all that extra IT stuff.

When I say 'which one,' I mean which program off of this index?

6. The latest version is ...
the one at the top of the list.
FeedReader 2.5 Alpha 610 (Dated 2003-04-23)

If you'd prefer, you can also download it from PC World. Here's the link

13. Thank you
As it only takes 3 to 5 megs of RAM (depending on what my computer feels like :)), I think I will always run it.:)

(I have Ethernet, btw.)

8. you don't download from that site, sorry
All you get is a bunch of gobbledegook and a list of mirror sites which take you to web pages that have nothing to do with it.

11. It takes you to SourceForge, which is the download site, but ...
Edited on Mon May-03-04 09:31 PM by BattyDem
I did a Google and found it at PC World. I hope this link works for you. :)

By the way, the SourceForge download site is the "official" download site, so it always contains the latest version. The PC World link has the same version, but an earlier build.

On edit: Here is the direct download link to SourceForge.net, the official download site for FeedReader. It's a list of mirror sites - choose the one closest to your location. Every mirror has the same 1238kb file (the links are on the right side in the "Download" column) so it doesn't matter which one you choose, but the general rule is to choose the site closest to your location because it will usually give you the fastest download speed (for dial-up connections - DSL or broadband is fast no matter where you download from)

9. It's easy ...
Click on "New" and a window will pop up asking you for the URL of the feed, which is http://www.democraticunderground.com/rss/lbn_feed.php :)

DU will appear in your news list. Click on it and you'll see all the headlines.

Click on "New" at the top of the Feedreader window. Another window will pop up - it will ask you for the URL of the news feed.

The link to the DU LBN newsfeed is
http://www.democraticunderground.com/rss/lbn_feed.php

That's what you'll type in the window. When you click "next" it will connect to DU and read the headlines. On the left side of the Feedreader window, you will then see an icon for "Democratic Underground Latest Breaking News". Click on it and the LBN headlines will appear on the right side.

Also, if you click on the "Available feeds" folder on the left side, you can select other newsfeeds that are already programmed into Feedreader. It's great if you have several news sites and blogs that you constantly check for info because you can do it with one program instead of visiting all the sites.
