Poll question: Your favorite ethnic/geographical cuisine?
I realize there are varietals within each category, but I only have ten choices! If other, please specify!

I had swimming angels and coconut soup tonight at Thai Ocean in Seattle's Green Lake neighborhood.

11. yeah, I know it is different, but I am sure most Chinese and Italian food
in the US is way different than food in those countries too:-)

But I have tried Mexican food in several US states, and it is nowhere NEAR as good as Tex Mex!

31. Tex-Mex is one of the original "fusion" cuisines.
The other southwestern states have their own versions. Outside the southwest, beware.

Of course, Texas also has restaurants boasting foods of "interior Mexico"--familiar to readers of Diana Kennedy & Rick Bayless. According to Houston Press food writer Robb Walsh, Rick wanted to include a chapter on Tex-Mex in his first book; he was told that was too un-hip.

We've got even more places opened by recent immigrants to feed even-more-recent immigrants--& smart gringos. Lots of places serve Northern style food, heavy on the meat, but other regions are represented. For example, cuisine from the Yucatan features black beans, pulled pork & pickled red onions. And there are lots of Mexican seafood restaurants, making the best of our Gulf Coast location.

For the interested, check out Robb Walsh's "Six Part History of Tex-Mex": www.houstonpress.com/special/texmex.html

Now I'm hungry for that other local specialty--the Mexican Breakfast.

26. TexMex is the thing I miss the most
about Texas. So far I haven't found a good Mexican food restaurant here in Oklahoma. I haven't found any decent hot sauce, they either put sugar in it and it's too sweet or else it's so hot that it has no taste. I want to be able to taste the ingredients in the hot sauce as well as enjoy the heat.

They also don't understand mole, it's either baseball nacho cheese sauce or chili on the enchiladas. No seasonings in the meat for tacos or enchiladas. The pico de gallo is out of a jar which is silly because pico is so easy to make. The fajitas are okay but the guacamole is so full of onions and tomatoes that it's almost as if the guacamole is a salad dressing.

Grumble, grumble, gripe, gripe!

You know you're in trouble when Taco Bell is the best TexMex you can find.

I eat pizza with my fingers, along with "chips and dip" at Mexican places.

Haven't met the dragonflies at my restaurants in Los Angeles. Don't think I need the extra protein.

But I would have voted Thai if you'd had it in the listing.

Still, it's pretty close.

In NJ, Italian isn't considered ethnic. It's daily fare.

22. Real Indian food rocks!
Not the half-assed American palate-pleasing bastardized creamy narrow-minded crap you find in restaurants here in the US of A.

Homemade is awesome! also the stuff you get in India is wicked!

The craziest thing of all is that real Indian food won't make a caucasian person sick. The crappy stuff in restaurants is what does it. Some of them keep stuff long after it should have been thrown out.

25. I don't find that to be true.
If you live in a large enough city, you'll find restaurants run by first-generation immigrants. I am lucky living in Chicago. To find a good restaurant, you just have to get a recommendation from someone who knows what's up, or find the place highly frequented by those who come from the area.

In fact, I found the food I can get in good restaurants in Korea town in Chicago to be indistinguishable from that found in Seoul. And my Korean friends agree!

But I do think you find crappy knockoffs everywhere. Chinese being the most frequently bastardized, in my opinion.
