WYEP- Pittsburgh's Best Radio Station - Turns 30
Thirty years ago today, in a dingy basement in South Oakland, WYEP went on the air. The concept was (and is) very simple. Put on the best music there is, with only community support. Except for a couple years when there wasn't any money (and technical problems galore), they have been meeting that goal- 24/7. There isn't a University big daddy, or any single huge contributor. It is all community based.

Check them out at . Listen on the Net! Become a member! Send them a Happy Birthday Email. Let's overwhelm them!

4. have listened to them for 25 years or so
I remember visiting that basement. They were one of the few stations to play punk and women's music and jazz back in the day. They played everything. It was wonderful. They still play a lot of stuff that no one else will play.

:toast:

5. Any Pittsburghers remember FreeForm WYDD 104.5?
I listened to it while in high school and it always had that "underground" feel. Especially loved Dr. Demento.

The days before corporate radio were great, weren't they?

I spent many great teenage nights with YDD and illegal substances. To be sure, radio was SO much better then.

6. Loved YEP when I was growing up in Pittsburgh!
Here's one show I remember: "Wet Pillows At Midnight." Anyone else?

WYEP turned me on to punk rock, and good radio in general. I've often wondered what happend to my YEP t-shirt: "Plug Us In." Circa '79. It may still be buried in a box at my dad's house in Pittsburgh.

I'll check out their site, say hi, and send 'em some bucks. Thanks for mentioning them!

He used to play Ian Durys and the Blockheads all the time.

"Reasons to be Cheerful, Part 3" was one of theiir best.

13. Anyone remember XX?
100.7 I believe, the first true alternative station I can remeber there...not like 105.9 theX is now. Then again, I now live in Cleveland and radio sucks even worse out here (thank God for satellite)!
