What music have you listened to today or yesterday?
Me - these CDs:

Hanson - Underneath (highly recommended - I think Hanson, Michelle Branch, and Avril Lavigne are three of the most underappreciated artists. This album shows cleaner production and more direction than This Time Around. Hanson has improved with each album.)
Chantal Kreviazuk - What If It All Means Something (highly recommended)
10,000 Maniacs - Campfire Songs (compilation of their work - highly recommended)
Abra Moore - Everything Changed (highly recommended)
Shelby Lynne - Love, Shelby (recommended)
Bob Dylan - Blood On The Tracks (highly recommended)

3. I watched the new Pixies DVD
Including all their videos, and a concert from London's Town and Country Club in 1988 (the same show the B-sides from the "Gigantic" single were culled from).

It also has a documentary where you get to hear luminaries like Bowie and luminaries-in-their-own-minds like Bono and Thom Yorke talk about how great the Pixies were. And lots of interview footage with Charles, Dave, and Joey (Kim did not participate).

a bit over a two hour show recorded live. "two days later and you're still dancing" tweaker music. quite trippy techno. I needed a change from the more brutal stuff I usually listen to...

83. Have a look at
... www.tranceaddict.com - and even if it's not there, there's a bunch of other great bootlegs on that site.

I've personally spent most of the day listening to www.di.fm - switching between the various channels. I then listened to a Metallica show that was recorded around 1 mile from my apartment. I was there, and it was one of THE best Metallica shows ever (just listen to the audience!). It's available www.metmp3.com - and now I've finally been able to get access to Air America, so I might listen to that for a while before I go to bed.

34. Well, the BEST are the original albums and EPs.
I have over half of Serge's LPs, but none of the 45s. "Comic Strip" is great for me, because it has the songs from the great mid-'60s EPs.

41. Yeah, but that's kinda crappy.
I like dancing to the original version.

You can find the 45s on eBay occasionally, but expect to spend upwards of $30 (that's almost $175 Canadian) on one in decent shape.

Actually, one song I really like (that I had to download, because I couldn't find it anywhere) is "Sea, Sex, and Sun" (version anglaise):

How old are you?
You look sixteen,
but you smile twenty-two.

What a dirty old fucker!

25. It was awesome.
On Friday we saw Trombone Shorty (funky jazz), The Savoy Family Band (zydeco). Jon Cleary and the Absolute Monster Gentlemen (funk), and Olu Dara. Olu Dara was amazing. I really wish he had more Cds available. I will travel to see him if he is anywhere near St. Louis. He started with that song "Herb Man." I love that song.

Saturday we saw Los Calientes first. This is one of the best salsa bands I have ever seen. If you are into salsa, get one of their albums. After Los Calientes we saw Snooks Eaglin. Snooks is one of my very favorite musicians. He put on a great show. After Snooks it was on to Geno Delafose and we finished with Macy Gray and Lenny Kravitz.

Sunday we saw Jason Marsalis. He is as good as his older brothers IMO. After Jason we saw Joe Krown, one of the funkiest organ players around. Next we saw Monk Boudreaus and the Mardi Gras INdians, then Jeremy Davenport. After that we danced to the Dirty Dozen Brass Band before finishing the day listening to Kermit Ruffins blow away the jazz tent with his trumpet.

I still have a giant smile on my face from all the good music we heard. You have to go next year.

61. Jason was playing the xylophone.
He had a drummer an bassist with him. Ordinarily he plays the drums. The kid is a great arranger and band leader. Watch out for him, he may be the most talented of Ellis' sons from what I saw.

Etta was the last show on Sunday. It was a rainy day. At the end of the day the weather got so bad that we did not want to keep the kids out in the storm. We left before Etta, but I heard she played an awesome set until the weather shut the festival down. She is coming to St. Louis in a few months, so I hope to see her hear as a consolation for missing her at jazzfest.

63. I'm not the best critic of live recordings...
I really only like live music if I'm at the concert... otherwise I prefer the ear-candy of a thick, wet studio production...

I guess that explains why "Exit..." works better for me.

Duran Duran's "Arena" was a live album that was barely recognizeable as such... and it's among my favorite live recordings.

Rock on!

Box of Birds had a great cover of Iggy Pop's The Endless Sea and the Beatles' It's All Too Much, but supposedly Steve has been busted for heroin possession now. I can see where they started to go downhill. A shame, really.

71. Did you see the DVD of "The Forever Changes Concert"????
It was UNBELIEVABLE!!! Arthur Lee looks & sounds great, his band is SMOKING, and he has a string section that completely fills in the sound...I was truly blown away...

It's one of my all time favorites too...I still play it every couple of weeks (and I first heard it 20 years ago!)

74. Not yet...
...I do have the concert on CD.

My buddy saw them in Cleveland last year. They didn't play FC (though they did most of the songs). He said it was incredible.

It's really kinda sad that Arthur was in prison when Bryan MacLean died. They hadn't been close for a long time, but I know Arthur respected Bryan -- his songs could be saccharine, but they also provided a perfect counterpoint for Arthur's songs ("Old Man" just before "The Red Telephone," for instance. And everyone loves "Alone Again Or," even though Arthur sang it).

60. 2-CD set, "The World of Johnny Horton."
There was a lot more to that man's music than "The Battle of New Orleans," "North To Alaska," and "Sink The Bismarck." Horton was a great talent who died way too young.

I've also been listening to various homemade CD collections of doo-wop and soul music.

I didn't know it had come out yet?

Mule Variations is excellent. Some slow, sad songs, some rockin ones too. Altogether, a masterpiece. Of course, his early stuff is wonderful too. Rain Dogs is particularly eclectic and beautiful!
