Am I the only human being alive who has no Friends?
I'm so lonely!

Actually, I've seen maybe four episodes of "Friends" in my life, each time feeling like I needed a deep, deep soul-cleaning after it was over. REALLY don't like the show (I hear lots of white people do, though).

Maybe that's why I have no Friends....

3. Sometimes I feel the same way
After I left Public Service for the last time I isolated myself for a long time. Kept my focus on my wife and my son and gave up almost all social life. I was disgusted not only with government but people in general. Once, I said that my public service career had been an exercise in looking at society through the anal orifice and I was just tired of it.

I'm paying for it now. Friends have moved away or moved on.

How pathetic is it when I consider people on DU who respond to my posts as my friends.......??????

15. Well, it's hard to make real friends once you're grown-up ...
I mean the kind of friends you had when you were a kid, you could just hang-out together and kill time.

Noone has time for that anymore, and it's a shame. And everyone is, for lack of a better word, guarded.

Why is it that we all look back and tell stories about our high-school and college days even ten and twenty years later. Shouldn't there be alot more stories to tell since then?

Well, good luck. I thought I had the whole thing sussed out by marrying my best friend - but that can have its down side as well.

25. Sorry, but I couldn't resist
Plus, my dogs are very small. A nine-pound Brussels Griffon and a little terrier. I guess I should invest in dogs more appropriate to snow country, like a Malamute or Siberian Husky!:-)

39. I cannot imagine what this dog looks like
Got a photo? He sounds adorable, but also a handful. My little guy is not too bad, as he is so small, but my terrier is a real nut. I feel bad for yelling at her, but I am so afraid she is going to get into trouble. She sometimes runs around like she's possessed. I am thinking of taking her for obedience training, but I really think she just needs to be sedated, only kidding.:D

9. I have exactly one friend who isn't online-only
not counting my lover, and it took me eighteen months to find that one. Moving tends to drastically deplete your supply.

I do think Internet 'ships of various kinds are just as important, if different from, "real" ones. I knew my soulmate for six years here, and finally got face time. I was in love from the first look. And we met on a BBS--though not this one. : ) Hence the moving...utterly worth it.

Peace, man. Don't look for them, and friends will find you.

12. Welcome to DU, XIX!
Making friends is hard, especially when you're out of school and no longer in that 24/7, must-interact-with-people mode. Most of the people I hang out with offline are people I knew in college, who've moved nearby.

Online, it's different.
I've only "met" my friend Tommy maybe three times, but I've known him for more than 12 years. We met on a Prodigy bulletin board years ago, and we've kept in touch (on and off, but on now) since.

I've also met quite a few DUers offline. I went to a party at RandomKoolZip's, I knew nobody there, except my husband. We had another party earlier in the evening -- the host was my friend who I've known since I was four, and I knew quite a few people there. I had a lot more fun at RKZ's.

19. That show gives caucasians a bad name.
Really, white people are, in general, okay people! Really, we are! Most of us are nothing like Joey, Chandler, or......Edgar, or whatever the skinny-headed one's name is.

Did you know that in Matt LeBlanc's native France, he is known as "Matt The White?"

21. I must insist that you watch the finale, RKZ.
Seriously. You won't honestly be able to say that you know ennui until you do. Ten years the show's been on, and it is still impossible to give a fuck! 'tis the perfect Baudelarian diversion!

I also recommend it for those with guilt issues. Watching "Friends" is like wearing a postmodern hairshirt.

If you can cite the Deputy Dan Coloring Book, you REALLY know your Firesign.

If you can cite it in SPANISH, you need a new life.

31. And Lo, there came unto them Phillip, called Punter;
and he was Lillian Roth in his extremity.

Merrily, Merrily he said unto them say, Merrily Merrily.

And he came. And he came unto the house of his mother's brother's father's servant saing, "Where am I?"

And there was no one there to answer him sayin, Yea, no where; but in the land of reversable cups, and sanitary pedistiles, and he dwelt in that land a long time, like worms from a hot cheese log.

22. Lots of acquaintences but no abiding friendships
Whoever it was upthread who said it's hard to meet people after you get out of school has it about right. :-(

But I wasn't all that social in high school, either. :-(

I do try to get out and meet people, but it's hard to take it to a plane other than just the temporary project you're working on.

I wish we all lived in DU town.
