DUers who grew up in the 80s....
Edited on Thu Apr-29-04 11:49 PM by HEyHEY
What tunes remind you of being young back then when they are on the radio? For me it's

Africa
Nothing's gonna stop us now
Living on a prayer
We built this city
Come dancing
That's what friends are for
(Which always brings a tear to my eye because my older sister and I shared a room together, we'd sit up late at night listening to the radio, that song was always on. I remember one night...she'd gotten in big trouble and was lying in bed crying when that song was on while I tried to comfort her....we were about 6 and 8 years old. It's sounds sappy, but I'd love to just live one of those night's again. Some of my best memories.)

1. Come Dancing....
A great, great Kinks song -- had a wonderful video too -- that did about 50 years of UK daily life in 3:46 or so. It's what Springsteen would sound like if he came from Muswell Hill, London N8 instead of Freehold, NJ.

The day they knocked down the palais
My sister stood and cried.
The day they knocked down the palais
Part of my childhood died, just died.

Ray Davies is a genius.

11. Oh yeah, those ones do it for me too!
A few others:

"Do You Really Want to Hurt Me" (Culture Club)
"What I Like About You" (The Romantics)
"Down Under" (Men at Work)
"Heat of the Moment" (Asia)
"Little Red Corvette/When Doves Cry" (Artist Formerly Known As)
"Steppin' Out" by Joe Jackson
"Centerfold / Freeze Frame" (J. Giles Band)

A while back I saw Martha Quinn doing a late night Time-Life record commercial. It made me a little sad, in a nostalgic, good way. They probably don't let folks her age within ten miles of MTV studios now. And J.J. Jackson? NO WAY!

13. Boy George
I had this friend in high school who was this real macho, tough guy. He was over to the house after school one day, and we were watching videos. A Culture Club video came on. And he said "That chick looks pretty good, I'd like to **** her." It was my sad duty to inform Greg that "chick" was a dude. That was pretty funny.

JJ Jackson died a while back, did you hear? And Alan whatshisname makes movies now. He moved backed to Birmingham, a few miles up the road, and was actually nominated for an Oscar for a movie (as producer), can't recall the name of it though.

27. Heh...
Many moons ago, but well after the '80s, a buddy of mine turned 21. We went to our favorite hard, hard, HARDCORE industrial/punk/skinhead/blood every night in the parking lot bar (where a bunch of us used to either play or bounce). It was Saturday, which was "dance nite" (ie a dj instead of the normal crappy local bands that were "normal" fare sunday-thursday, or the occasional real shows, with people like JFA, Clutch, Meatmen, Marilyn Manson before he became big, Jim Rose's circus, et cetera) for the not-normal crowd. He got completely ripped, aber naturlich, and they put Karma Chamelion on. He was spotted dancing by himself on the dance floor to it. It's 12 years later, and we STILL give him shit about it.

20. Angel of Death, You've got another thing coming, Master of Puppets
Slayer, Priest, Pre-sellout Metallica.

The bad songs that really stir memories are from the 70's when I was a little kid in Wildwood NJ for the summer. Like shit by Leo Sayer, Seals and Crofts, Andrea True, the Pina Colada song, Captain and Tennile just godawful songs but they do bring back good memories of childhood.
