1. The Best Band I Never Heard......

From the mid-sixties on, I've been lucky enough to hear a lot of fine musicians. Especially in the folk, blues, rootsy genres. Quite a few of them came from down here in Texas and many more passed through. But the Red Clay Ramblers rarely made it to Houston. Well, they took part in a play or two at our Alley Theater, but I missed those shows.

However, listening to their recorded output in the last few years really made me love them. Silly, funky, ragtime songs. Tunes you can trace back to the hills, then farther back across the Atlantic--to the British Isles & Africa. A bit of folk-rock. And lyrics with serious poetry.

I'm glad they're still playing. Enjoy the show & raise a toast to the late Tommy Thompson.

2. Tommy Thompson

Our PBS station did a kind of combo RCR-retrospective and memorial to Tommy Thompson. It was so horrible that somebody that fucking talented could die so young. :-(

I would love to see Kudzu, the musical they did based on Doug Marlette's comic strip.

It's such a musical education listening to them.
