My entry for the dumbest phone call ever
Phone rings at 5:23 a.m. Of course I leap up in instant panic mode and grab it just after the second ring.

It's the mother of a girl my 17 year-old son knows from school.

me 'hello?'

her 'Hi. This is Mrs. ________. Is Sam there?'

me 'He's sleeping, is it important?'

her 'Does he know David?'

me 'David who lives down the street, or David his cousin?'

her 'No, David who hangs out with Chris, one of the kids that my daughter skipped school with yesterday.'

me 'skipped school? Sam skipped school yesterday?'

her 'no, but my daughter and 4 other kids did, and I'm trying to find out who David is.'

me 'oh. Can I have him call you back at 6 when he wakes up?'

her 'that'd be fine, thank you.'

So he just called her back. The conversation on his end went something like - 'Hello? Mrs. _____ this is Sam. Mom said you needed me to call' ...long pause... 'No, not really' ..short pause.. 'It's ok.' .very short pause. 'Bye.'

:eyes:

It's going to be a long day.

4. While we're on the subject of dumbest...
How about the world's dumbest swindlers?

You made me remember this article from my local paper. (pay to view)

Sri Lankans' US$1m note swindle fails

Three Sri Lankans allegedly took a counterfeit US$1 million banknote to a Hong Kong bank to try to open an account, a court heard yesterday....

...The Eastern Court heard the three had tendered one US$1 million banknote at an HSBC bank in Central on Monday. The highest denomination of US currency still produced is $100, though bills of $10,000, printed in the second world war, are still accepted.

Trying to jog my memory - something about a Kentucky? fast food place and accepting a $200.00 bill.

Can't kick my brain into anything but neutral, I'll to go see if I can find the story.

That was easy-
here it is:

Kentucky cashier falls for fake Bush $200 bill
January 30, 2001
Web posted at: 9:06 AM EST (1406 GMT)

DANVILLE, Kentucky (AP) -- A $200 bill bearing the likeness of President Bush would seem to be an obvious fake. But it seemed real enough to fool one fast-food cashier.

Police are looking for the person who used the bill to buy $2.12 worth of food at a Dairy Queen, and drove away after getting $197.88 in change.

In addition to the Bush portrait on the front, the treasury seal is marked with the phrase, "The right to bear arms." An oil well appears on the back of the bill.

Guess the cashier skipped a few days of school, too.

7. Maybe David
Gave her drugs or slept with her and the mom is flipping out. Either that or she's crazy.

8. I'm thinking
option #2 is pretty much a sure bet - probably due to option #1.

I feel bad for her. Her daughter and the group she hangs with are heading down a really rocky road right now.

Sam used to be friends with them, but he's pretty sure he doesn't want to go where they're going, so he pulled away several months ago.

Not that he's some perfect angel goody-two-shoes (gag me), but he's got a fairly good head on his shoulders for a 17 yr old.
