Athens, Georgia
Anybody have any opinions? Cultural events, "liberalness" (I'm thinking it's gotta be a pretty liberal place if the B-52s and REM came from there), climate, etc.?

1. Cool place
I hit a football game or so every few years up there (when my school is in town). I get the impression that it is pretty open minded (at least as far as you can go with a big state school). Best thing you can do is vist for yourself and make up your own mind.

By the way, great music scene and good developing micro breweries too (check out www.terrapinbeer.com).

Weather is good too, but in the SE, from about May through October it can be quite warm.

3. I've been researching the area, and plan to go there in a
month or so... trying to get my house fixed up and on the market. I like very much that it's got a big university, it seems that a person can usually find something interesting to do in a university town, especially one with as many programs as UGa has. And, the music scene has a good rep., as you've mentioned. I'll check out the microbrewery site, too. Thanks.

Warm weather? Yes, please!

2. 40 Watt Club
College town.

Lots of rednecks but you can find a liberal crowd to hang out with.

Use to go see the Killkenney Kats and the BBQ Killers down at the 40 Watt.

Kind of a sleepy town if you do not dive into the college scene.

I haven't heard anyone mention the Killkenny Cats or the 40 Watt club since I was in college at UGA during the early to mid '80s. I had a blast at UGA but haven't been back too much since I graduated in '86. I was at the 40 Watt Club the night the Killkenny Kats had their equipment damaged by the slam dancing "neopunk frat boys" that had invaded the place. LOL

PS. You'd better also like football if you go there. SEC football around there is a big event.

9. Went to school at GA Southern
We use to do road trips to Savannah or Athens or Atlanta all the time.

Southern has the rep for a party school but that was only if you were a big keg party frat type.

The best parties we use to have was on the front porch of a friend's house making Low Country Boil and drinking Rolling Rock while smoking cigs and shooting the shit.

6. Right here, right now...
and I freakin' love it.
Very liberal town (we didn't even have a repub candidate for mayor)
Beautiful weather and flora and fauna (I just saw a deer in my backyard and I'm a 3 minute drive from the center of downtown)
Incredible visual arts and music scene
Beautiful young women EVERYWHERE you look (Hey, I'm a lech)
Sorry If I sound like a Chamber of Commerce shill :)
