Just for giggles, pretend the ark landed 4,000 feet short of the peak - 13,000 feet. In order for 13,000 feet of rain to fall in 40 days, it would have to be raining 13 feet an hour. That's like ... uh - a hard raid. It would have washed all the soil into the oceans, making them a muddy mess, killing all the plankton, fish and marine mammals.

The data seems to say the "dam" for lack of a better name that kept the Ocean out of the Med and the similiar "dam" that kept the Med out of the Black sea were breached and may have caused floods at that point - indeed the Turkey/Black sea has a lot of evidence to support that it is indeed the sudden flood in the Bible.

But I thought the rise was only a several hundred feet.

"flood in Mesopotamia" implies Iraq in my mind - which does not tie to the Black sea.
