34. what is the intent?
I took it to mean "America is above god"...what else could it mean? it's not "America under God" or anything...but if there is another interpretation, I'm curious

36. see, I think that's funny
I'm offended by the "God Bless America" ones, implying the God gives a flying .... about the actions of nation states, but I find it highly amusing to spin the joke around. If we can, by the manufacture of cheap pieces of sticky plastic, command God to bestow a blessing, then certainly we can do the reverse, don't you think?

It's a joke.

42. That's what I was thinking
Edited on Tue Apr-27-04 12:40 PM by redqueen
That we've gone from convincing ourselves that God bestows his blessings upon our country to the detriment of others, to thinking that it's our right to tell her to do so. I also thought that perhaps they were saying that the fundies needed to 'help' God to take back this country / the world.

I hope I'm wrong!

15. There aren't any drunken senators in S.D....
just drunken EX-representatives, like Bill Janklow (R-Also Banned from Indian Reservation as Fugitive from Tribal Justice).

S.D.'s Senators are both Dem (and sober :-) ): Majority Leader Tom Daschle, and Tim Johnson, the only member of Congress to have a child (son Brooks) serving in the military (take that, repuke chickenhawks!)

Civil disobedience includes anything that rails against the dominant paradigm. Any opportunity I have to let them know they can't bully us in to silence with their fascist agenda I take.

33. I guess that really depends...
Some situations call for more drastic measures.
An example:
Smaller scale - not sitting where you are told on a bus
Smaller scale - sit in for peace
Larger scale - not moving out of the way of a tank
Larger scale - dumping tea in the harbor

It is all a matter of degrees. When things become worse, more is needed. Right now a big black marker is enough.

37. but there is nothing in the history of civil disobediance theory
as Ghandi and Dr. King would describe it that allows for the destruction of another person's property. The Boston Tea Party had the permission of the onwer of the tea (who was among them) to do the dumping, the only group that lost out was the taxman. You have no right to destroy or damage another person's property without their permission.

By the way, just outside of DC the other night, someone spraypainted swastikas and wrote "white power" in spray paint on the side of a house belonging to the only black family in the subdivision. you do understand that your use of a sharpie to deface someone's property, and subsequent defense of that action, puts you in the same company as those assholes? different viewpoints, same vandalism.

congratulations.

38. you gotta fight asshole with asshole....
The other side has raised the stakes. They stopped fighting fair a long time ago. It's like when the Polish Cavalry got rolled over by German tanks. They were fighting a conventional war. The Germans were not.

You can't bring a feather to a gun fight. The other side plays dirtier and meaner every year. Our side sits around and whines because they don't play fair. In the process we get our asses kicked. If everybody played by the same rules, then drastic measure would not be needed. They don't play by any rules. They play to win at any cost. Our side wants tea party rules. Their side would nuke a city just to destroy the cups.

We can all sit around an bemoan how they don't play fair and think that if we continue to play by the rules that things will get better. We think if we play by the rules we have some kind of moral high-ground. That is HORSESHIT! We can play nice ourselves right in to extinction. Or we can show a little backbone and hit them with their own dirty tricks.

If being on this side means I gotta sit and take it so our side can be morally superior for not taking the low road, then screw that. I will not tolerate bullies. I will not tolerate fascism. I will not tolerate defeat. I'm willing to do whatever it takes to make sure THEY don't turn the entire world in to their little personal theocratic fascist police state. Why aren't you?

39. becoming them means they win
don't you understand that? adopting their tactics means that they win, that we can ceded our nation to thugs. Beating up a bully may, in fact, be satisfying, but at the end of the day, it just makes you a bigger bully. An eye for an eye leads to he breakdown of civil society and chaos. If you can't turn the other cheek to wrongs commited against you, both real and perceived, then you are not actually any use. If you act like a thug, then you ARE a thug. sorry, but the ends rarely justify the means, when the means involve the destruction of other people.

41. And that attitude is why our side - LOSES!!!
The Dems in Congress rolled over for GW.

It's tactics that you are suggesting that make it easy for them to roll right over us. Remember that it's easier to sucker punch you when you are looking the other way.

If you turn the other cheek with fascists, they send you to the gas chamber. That is why there is Yom HaShoah. It is a Jewish holiday that reminds us to never forget what happens when fascists take control.

Responses like yours are the reason why I can see why the Repukes say that liberals are, pardon the term, PUSSIES. They count on responses like yours. They wait in the wings for people like you. They know that you won't trade them blow for blow to get what you want.

Malcolm X said that you must be willing to reach your goal by any means necessary. If you are not willing to do that then THEY have won.

44. in case you didn't notice
Malcolm X is dead. He renounced violence and one of his own thugs killed him. Good role model for you.

I will trade anyone blow for blow as long as it is within the rules, be they Marquess of Queensbury or the Constitution. And one of my rules is that I will not destroy your private property to make a point. sorry, it's not going to happen. I will not lie about you to make a point. If you want to fight dirty in the back alleyways of life, go right ahead, enjoy yourself, but that does not make a society, it makes a slum. And if you want to come onto my property and vandalise it, well that's your choice, but I will retaliate, legally, be prepared for that.
