Going to Vegas for a trade show in May. Any suggestions.....
of what I shouldn't miss? I've never been there before and I'm not really into gambling (although paying the money to do the show is a huge gamble).
Anything I should be sure to see? Staying at Harrah's.

1. I'll be riding from Sacramento to Vegas in early June
with my brother-in-law. Last time I was there (Nov. 2002), I hadn't been since 1980. It certainly has changed. This time I plan on spending time to walk the entire Strip beginning at the Stratosphere. The thing I remember most from last time is the Fremont Street (?) light show. It's where they covered the old Strip. Big rush!

4. Hoover Dam
Hoover Dam is worth visiting once--it's a lasting monument to the New Deal.

I also think that the Strip has a few things worth seeing--at least at night.

5. Drive Out to the Valley of Fire State Park
About 60 miles out of town on I-15. Take the exit for Overton and follow the signs. Red rocks are far as the eye can see - absolutely breath-taking.

(My wife and I lived in Overton for about a month, and spent as much time as we could in the Valley of Fire. After we moved to Henderson, we drove out as often as we could.)

8. Funny story about Atlantic city casino............
Quite a few years ago I had to do a show in atlantic city. Ended up staying at the Playboy (now something else, anyway). The guys and I were having drinks in one of the bars one night and this beautiful woman comes up and sits at our table. We all end up having a great conversation and I'm thinking this is really cool just chating. I thought she was really nice and real easy to look at. After a couple of hours she gets up and said she had to go to work. I said loudly because I didn't really hear what she said " You have to go where?" Everybody said to me at the same time "Be Quiet". I didn't understand what they were talking about and why did I have to be quiet. It then dawned on me she was a hooker and that's why she had to go to work. LOL I was in my thirties and she was the first hooker I ever met. God, was I naive.
She said she'd look us up later but never did see her again.
Even today about things like that I'm still naive.
Vegas ought to be a hoot.

9. fountains at the Bellagio
best free show on the Strip. And would you do me a favor? toss a penny in the lake and make a wish for a fellow DU'er.

If you have time take a trip to the Grand canyon or at least to the dam. If you're going with a loved one, a gondola ride at the Venetian. sunday morning buffet at the Bellagio, ride to the top of the Eiffel Tower at Paris. just go and have a good time. You don't have to gamble to have a good time there. PM me back if you need some specifics.

11. Just went there in febuary
Make sure you go to the "Real" strip, not just lasvegas blvd. The fountains at the Bellagio are worth a stop and gawk, and Red Rock canyon is a must see.

12. Voodoo Lounge at the Rio
If you are not afraid of heights and looking for a good view of the Strip, you can't beat the Voodoo Lounge. 50+ stories up, the Voodoo Lounge is located at the top of the Rio hotel. The lounge has glass walls and a outside patio. Since the Rio is located off the Strip, the view of the Strip is great, especially at night.

There's a free shuttle between Harrah's and the Rio. There is usually a $10.00 cover charge to enter. Drinks are on the higher end. Dress code is business casual. There is usually live music.

Great for a relaxing evening with a scenic view and a cocktail.

Spent two hours loading my van at a show last night because they didn't have enough carts to go around.

18. Thanks for the advice. My equipment is being shipped........
by truck so the crate should be at the booth. The rest of my stuff I can hand carry.
Have to tell you shipping cost are going to kill me. What do they say? You have to spend money to make it.
So it goes.

He is an impersonator who does hundreds of characters and actually starts to LOOK like them when imitating them...talented guy and worth seeing.

17. good location
While I'm not crazy about their hotel, it's adequate and the location is fantastic. Walk across to Mirage and check out the white tigers in the front window. Next to Mirage on the North Side is Treasure Island with their free pirate show. On the south side of Mirage is Caesar's Palace -- Caesar's Forum shopping mall is (I think) the busiest shopping mall in the world. Next is Bellagio with the worst free show in Vegas, the dancing water fountains. You have to see it to believe how tacky it is. On Harrah's side of the street, to the north, walk a short ways toward the Venetian and check out their shopping mall also with the gondolas. Or walk south past Imperial Palace until you come to Flamingo and walk back to their wildlife area where they feed the Penguins at 3 or 3:30 every afternoon (sorry, forgot exactly which time). Sometimes they have a baby Penguin hatched out. The cocktail waitresses in Imperial Palace are well-known for their near-nudity, unless they have changed their costume since the change of management, so check it out.

If you want low limit gambling, next to Harrah's to the north is Casino Royale (also owned by Harrah's) which sometimes has $1 dice games and $2 blackjack.

There is a free shuttle that runs back and forth between Harrah's and the sadly over-rated Rio.

There's a lot more to see in Vegas but that's a quick look at what you will encounter just strolling around the Harrah's area. You will not want or need a car. The pedestrians make driving in Central Strip a nightmare.
