What's the WORST beer you've ever tasted?
I could name plenty of crap lagers such as Fosters and Coors but the absoute worst beer I have ever tasted is Ridley's Rumpus, which is a beer local to where I live. Not only does the stuff taste just utterly rank wherever you drink it but it really does not agree with my system. I honestly cannot bring myself to drink one pint of the stuff.

http://www.ridleys.co.uk/frameset.htm

And it takes something to be worse than the likes of Rolling Rock!

39. point of comparison
corona = coors

budwieser = tecate

worst beers: miesterbrau, old milwaukee, hamms in a can, miller in a can, there are plenty (mostly american)- they get sold in 18, 24 and 30-some packs

81. I drank Rolling Rock all through BNCOC
When you went to the NCO Academy at Fort Devens, you lived three in a room with a refrigerator. I kept three things in my refrigerator at all times: Gulden's mustard, Oscar Mayer hard salami, and Rolling Rock. (I kept the veggies, bread, etc., in cans on top of the refrigerator.)

Every morning we had a room inspection and every fucking morning the first sergeant would count the Rolling Rocks to make sure the number was lower than the day before. He was a Rolling Rock fan too--and he was an intelligence analyst who knew the value of beer to the intelligence community.

There were about six of us who drank Rolling Rock, and he inventoried everyone else's beer. It wasn't just me.

Strangely enough, he never checked the beer inventory of anyone who didn't drink Rolling Rock. Everybody needs a hobby.

The Ice does not taste as bad as the regular or light. 5.9% alcohol;

I think of it as my own personal rotgut beer!

Samuel Adams' Light is the most recent beer I've tried which I thought was CRAP.

That is, beers breweed with cinnamon. They tend to be a tad overpowering on that front, quite strong and not for the faint hearted! I've had a couple of spice beers like that. One from Belgium, one from another brewery local to me.

104. Probably wasn't a good one
Most people prefer it with fruit syrup in it - it has to be a very good brew to be potable without syrup or juice.
Anyway, it isn't a "Hefeweizen", but "Weisse". Both brewing styles use wheat, but aren't identical otherwise.

:hi:

IMHO is Weisse the best beer for hot days, bar none.

18. Jax - some swill produced in the back alleys of New Orleans
Since first encountering this biological specimen preservative back in the early 1980s, I've been unable to find it again - thank God.

It had a weakish malted taste which betrayed some connection to barley in its distant past, but whatever hints of natural flavor it contained were well-hidden by a distinctively ferocious bite somewhere between formaldahyde and ethylene glycol.

Farewell, Jax Beer, and good riddance!!

49. Bad Beer v. Beer Your Don't Like
They are not the same thing. I think of myself as a beer snob, but I keep the rocks nice and cold in the garage fridge for after yardwork (or maybe during, depending on my proximity to things like chainsaws or even weedwackers).

Yes, beer with a rice component tastes different, but it's a great way to make a "light" tasting beer.

Coors Extra Gold is also a decent, every day grab-a-can-of beer, but its hard to get (at least where I am. The distributor just doesn't carry it).

I agree with the prior poster that Jax may have been one of the worst beers ever brewed. Worse even than 1970s/80s generic yellow BEER, which I used to buy in college. (It did go well with generic yellow CHOCOLATE CHIP COOKIES, and I still enjoy a lighter beer and a cookie every now and then).

I think most "bad beer" comments (aside from spoiled beer) comes from acquired tastes and things that dont' fit one's preconception of what beer should taste like. Beer can taste like just about anything you put in it, and if you can find it on the shelf more than a few trips in a row, then somebody probably thinks it tastes OK.

The only real exception is the stuff that runs under $15 a case. Think of Strohs, for example and go down from there, passing along the way Hamms, Old Milwaukee, etc. (I used to drink OM in my teens becuase, hey, you got two extra ounces in every can! But I wasn't very discering yet).

54. Rice? No Way
Rice is a cheap way of making beer and that is why it is used by many big brewers. Better to get a beer made with decent ingredients which actually has some flavour to it. Even light summery beers taste miles better without rice.

53. Red, White, and Blue
I don't know if it's still around, but in the 70's it was the cheaper alternative to Pabst Blue Ribbon from the Pabst breweries. I think they had a deal with medical labs to bottle urine specimens after the labs were through with testing. So it was not just pisswater, but stale pisswater mixed with lab testing solutions.

156. I have a Red, White & Blue story for you.
My father's best friend passed away about 15 years ago. He was quite a character and loved Red, White & Blue beer. If Big Ed came over to the house to watch football or whatever, he would bring along his own supply of RWB. God-awful stuff.

Anyway, the day he passed away, my dad called to tell me about it and later that evening I wandered over to my hang-out bar, which bragged about their unequalled selection of beers - beers from every contintent, etc. etc.

I ordered up a can of RWB in memory of Big Ed - and to my complete shock, they had it! It's the last time I ever drank it or saw it anywhere.

Edited on Thu Apr-22-04 01:01 PM by JVS
Fortunately you cannot get this in the USA. When I was in Montreal I bought a 40 of this because it cost the same as a 40 of Labatt Blue and had almost twice the kick. It was terrible.

On edit: I'd also like to nominate some of the micro-brewers out there who think that hops are some kind of magical ingredient that it is always better to add more and more of. Don't get me wrong, I like a good bitter pilsner, I can even enjoy a Jever pils occasionally. But beer that tastes like aspirin is not cool.

My brother and I were at my grandmothers a few years back, and this was after my grandfather had been dead for a while. We found his secret stash of booze in his closet, and there was nary a good beer among the lot. We took a Coors "Banquet Beer" and shoved it into the fridge along with a Shlitz. It was the worst thing I have ever tasted. The Schlitz was better.

75. The absolute worst beer of all time is.......
Wisconsin Club!!!!!

When I was in college, we could get three cases for $10. $10 divided by 72 bottles is about 13 cents a bottle. Now that is some truly bad beer.

Honorable mentions go to:
1) Stag
2) Reinlander
3) Big Jug Beer
4) Red, White, and Blue

BTW, this is one of the best DU topics, ever.

79. Newcastle Brown Ale
I had it once, and that was enough. It was a struggle to finish the bottle. Bitter, flat and almost salty. Even if I happened to get a bad batch, I wouldn't buy from a brewery that let stuff that bad get out the door.

Also of note:

Heineken-Don't get me wrong, it's okay if it's the only beer available, but-to put it bluntly-it reminds me of the piquant aftertaste of my own vomit.

Lost Lake-this may be a regional brand. Apparently manufactured by having somebody whisper "beer" over a tank of fetid water. College favorite. A 12-pack is about six bucks (good thing, too, because you'll need to buy a few of them to get any sort of buzz).

the only way to get it down is to cool to the point where the iron filings drop to the bottom of the bottle, then decant & strain it thru a napkin.

when in school, i used to keep a case of it around so i could offer it to those who i wanted to leave my house. one sip of iron city and they were on their way.

...Decided to brew our own. Hell, it was HIS idea. I want to be on the record with that. Anyway (we were at Cornell), we went down to an Ithaca shop that sold home-brewing equipment. We bought all of it. Long story short: Three months later, the beer was done. We'd fermented it in our fucking closet, right? I'm sure my dirty socks added to the "spicey" nose of the brew. Oh, we drank it. Don't doubt that. We drank every goddamn drop of that swill. But it basically tasted like Guiness mixed with prune juice and Drano.

I ain't tried home-brewing since.

hands down, no contest. I also hate Schlitz, and those are the only two beers I can't drink. Funny thing is, I really love the High Life, and I'm not too big on American beers.

Speaking of London, I was there about six months ago. Some older gentlemen I met in a pub turned me on to "bitter." Really good stuff, lots of taste. Not sure where it came from though, so it was a bit scary.

The worst beer ever is Coor's Light. :puke: Bad beer, bad politics.

I have actually developed a taste for Corona since moving in with the Bunch. Jag looooves Corona, second only to Hofbrauhaus Hefeweitzen, which he wishes came in a half-the-alcohol formulation so it'd be as mild as Corona.

But Coors--ugh. I will never touch that crap again.

I can handle Beast if I drink it fast enough. Old Style Light is just BAD.

131. KEYSTONE LIGHT!!!
A friend of mine told me to try it; he had a 6-pack on him. That Keystone Light couldn't travel from my mouth to the sink any faster.

132. Lucky Lager
Washington beer. At the end, it sold for 5 bucks a case. Legend has it that the reason it was so cheap is that after the brewery closed, they had warehouses full of the stuff and took years to sell it off. Noted for its rebus puzzles in the bottle cap, because you had to have something to do while you struggled to down the nastiest beer on the continent.

152. Have to agree, even though it's the "hometown favorite"
Or at least used to be. Even though the beer sucked, it's still kinda sad that the brewery closed down :(

142. Two- Kirin (Japan) and Panache (France)
Kirin is just bloody awful. It tastes like a beer brewed by people who know sake. I bought it because I collected bottles and the label had a fantastic looking dragon on it. It still does, the stuff has apparently become somewhat mainstream. Must be the novelty factor, it sure as hell aint the brew.

Panache is just weird. I have only seen it once, in a little liquor store where I used to live that specialized in stocking EVERYTHING. It came in these little green bottles and tasted like Sprite with some sort of chemical contaminant. It's as if they couldn't decide whether to make champagne, wine, beer, or paint remover.

145. Kirin?
The pub nearest where I live currently has a "lagers of the world" festival on.......sponsored by Coors!

Needless to say you can imagine the crap that they have brought in as guest beers and Kirin is one of them. Why they bother with that sort of nonsense is beyond me when the pub in question stocks Leffe Blonde anyway!

159. Panache is lemonade with beer
Wouldn't touch that stuff - many French beers taste like lemonade anyway.

For the record: there are excellent French beers, like Pelforth or the ultra-tastefree Kronenbourg.

163. "The Ultra taste free Kronenberg"
Now maybe this is just the CAMRA member in me but I cannot for the life of me work outwhat there is to like about a beer like Kronenberg. No flavour whatsoever. I like a beer with a bit of flavour at least, otherwise I might as well drink tapwater than Kronenburg.

170. I agree somewhat
However, compared to the French Lemonade-Brews, like Fischer, Kronenbourg is a step ahead.
I had the opportunity to try the common French beers, IMHO Pelforth (Blonde and brune) is really good, Kronenbourg 1664 is good, Kronenbourg drinkable (tastes like water). Kanter is OK as well, most others are hardly potable.

150. A beer that had been used as an Ash Tray
That was by far the worst beer I had ever tasted. I'm not much of a beer drinker anymore, in fact I can't remember when the last time it was, and not because I drink too often, however, the worse tasting beer I have ever had was one that had been used as an ash tray.

You all know how that happens too.

153. Hmmm, so little time...
Geez, I'm impressed that so many of us are disenchanted with the mass produced brews. I dislike Bud myself, but obviously millions of others love it.

Many of the regional brews make these lists because they have unique tastes and characteristics.

I live in PA, and we have several breweries scattered all over the state. The worst PA brew that I ever tasted was Ortliebs, which was made in the hard coal region. I'll blame it on the water. Stegmeier, another regional brew was pretty edgy. I never liked Iron City either. There are more bad ones than good ones, Rolling Rock is actually a pretty good one, IMHO. And of course, I love most of the Yuengling products (Black & Tan rocks.)

Also, a lot of asian beers taste funny - OB from Korea, Ching Tao from China. I've been told they put formaldehyde in their beers, but that could have been a gag. Japanese beers like Kirin & Sapporo remind me of American brews. Any character and body is smoothened right out of them.

My dad, who could drink any beer in the world, likes Genessee Light. Go figure. I guess there is no accounting for taste.

154. Budweiser. It's bitter, and ..
I always have a headache the next day. So, I never drink it.

I really don't care for beer anyway.

The only European beer I've ever drank is St Pauleys, and I thought it tasted like it had been consumed once before I consumed it again, if you know what I mean. AWFUL! BLECH!

Had a picture of an Orca on the label. A friend got it as part of a sampler 6 pack.

Tasted like it was brewed using salt water.
